The number of adolescent girls in the United States and throughout the West claiming “gender dysphoria” and seeking sex change therapies and operations has skyrocketed over the past decade, leading some experts to conclude that society, not psychology, is driving the increase.
An investigation by Wall Street Journal opinion writer Abigail Shrier, which ultimately formed the basis of her book, “Irreversible Damage: Teenage Girls and the Transgender Craze,” an excerpt of which has been published by the Daily Mail, found that societal influences are mostly driving the trend in the same way they fueled earlier self-destructive behaviors.
Shrier’s work is compassionate and extensive, yet she has been met with attempt after attempt to kill the message and ban the messenger. The first publisher for the book aborted the project after members of the company’s staff protested. Amazon reluctantly carries the book, but refuses to let Shrier’s publisher buy online ads. Woke virtue-signalers everywhere are coming up with ways to shut her up.
In face of these attempts at censorship, Shrier has condemned what she calls ‘tyranny’s advance’, saying: ‘This is what censorship looks like in 21st Century America.
‘It isn’t the government sending police to your home.
‘It’s Silicon Valley oligopolists implementing blackouts and appeasing social-justice mobs, while sending disfavoured ideas down memory holes.
‘And the forces of censorship are winning.’
“Gender dysphoria is characterized by a severe and persistent discomfort in one’s biological sex. It typically begins in early childhood, ages two to four, though it may grow severe in adolescence,” Shrier wrote, adding that the feeling resolves itself “in about 70 percent of cases” as kids age.

Typically the condition afflicted only about .01 percent of the population and “almost exclusively boys,” she wrote, adding that before 2012, “there was no scientific literature on girls aged 11 to 21 ever having developed gender dysphoria.”
But in the years since, “that has changed dramatically,” Shrier wrote.
Throughout the West, “a sudden surge” of children and adolescents now say they are experiencing gender dysphoria and thus are self-identifying as opposite their biological sex, but the vast majority are girls.
“In Britain, Canada, Sweden and Finland, clinicians and gender therapists began reporting a dramatic shift in the demographics of those presenting with gender dysphoria, from predominately pre-school-aged boys to predominately adolescent girls,” she writes, adding that Britain experienced a 4,400-percent increase over the preceding decade in teenaged girls getting gender-alteration treatments.
In the U.S. between 2016 and 2017, “the number of gender-reassignment surgeries for girls” increased four-fold, “with people born female suddenly accounting for 70 percent of all such operations,” she added.
To explain it, the WSJ columnist and author said she spoke to dozens of experts including endocrinologists, psychiatrists, notable psychologists who specialize in gender dysphoria, and psychotherapists — including transgender adolescents and transgender adults.
“The more I learned about the adolescents who suddenly identify as transgender, the more haunted I became by one question: what’s ailing these girls?” Shrier continued.
The WSJ published an article she wrote titled, “When Your Daughter Defies Biology,” in January 2019, and was inundated with emails from readers who said their kids had undergone the same phenomenon she described in the story.
She said she was also attacked online by transgender activists, but she reached out to many of them and gave them an opportunity to educate her on the issue. In all, she said she conducted almost 200 interviews, all of which helped form the basis of her book — and her conclusions.
“Indeed, some small portion of the population will always be transgender,” noted Shrier. However, “they have very little to do with the current trans epidemic plaguing teenage girls.”
She added that the current craze more resembles “the Salem witch trials of the 17th Century, the nervous disorders of the 18th Century, and anorexia nervosa, repressed memory, bulimia and the self-harm contagion in the 20th Century.”
And while “their distress is real…their self-diagnosis is flawed — more the result of encouragement and suggestion than psychological necessity.”
“Three decades ago, these girls might have hankered for liposuction. Two decades ago, they might have ‘discovered’ a repressed memory of childhood trauma or multiple personality disorder,” writes Shrier. “Today’s diagnostic craze isn’t demonic possession – it’s gender dysphoria.”
What makes the phenomenon so serious is that many young girls who believe they are experiencing gender dysphoria have often permanent, life-altering, biology-changing surgeries and treatments.
Shrier has identified a number of causes, including social media and readily available — and often violent — online pornography.
“Anorexia, self-harm and suicide have all increased dramatically since the arrival of the smartphone,” she wrote, noting that the quest to win followers is often a driver behind claims of transgenderism.
“Pornography also plays a role. Violent porn – readily available to children on platforms such as Pornhub – terrifies young girls about men and the prospect of sex with them,” she added.
The lengthy Daily Mail post is worth reading and it ends with this:
My message is this: young women should stop taking sex stereotypes seriously. A young woman can be an astronaut or a nurse; a girl can play with trucks or with dolls.
And she may find herself attracted to men or to other women. None of that makes her any less of a girl or any less suited to womanhood.
Girls are not defective boys. They are different. They possess a whole range of emotions and capacities for understanding that boys, in general, do not. If only we didn’t make them feel so bad about this.
Tell your daughter that she’s lucky. She’s special. She was born a girl. Being a woman is a gift, containing far too many joys to pass up.
