Fmr. child murder suspect Casey Anthony applies to open new business in Florida; raises eyebrows

Casey Anthony, who garnered national attention nearly a decade ago after being charged with the murder of her two-year-old daughter, has filed paperwork in Florida to launch a private investigation firm.

Anthony filed the paperwork with the Florida Division of Corporations in mid-December, The Associated Press reported, noting that the firm will be based in Palm Beach County.

The firm is a limited liability corporation by the name of Case Research & Consulting Services with a launch date of Jan. 1. The address for the company belongs to Patrick McKenna, according to Palm Beach County property records accessed by the AP.

McKenna was the lead investigator for Anthony’s defense team during her trial in 2011, for which she was acquitted on charges of murder, child abuse, and manslaughter. He was also the lead investigator for former NFL great O.J. Simpson when he was charged with murdering his wife; he, too, was acquitted.

Anthony was convicted on four counts of lying to police officers, though two of those counts were later dropped. She served nearly three years behind bars while waiting to be tried.

In 2008, the body of Anthony’s daughter, Caylee Anthony, was found near the family home in Orlando, Fla., about a month after Casey, then 22, left her parents’ home in mid-June following an argument.

Casey Anthony was arrested in mid-July after her parents, George and Cindy Anthony, became suspicious and contacted police. At that time, Caylee had been missing for about a month.

At a court hearing a week later, prosecutors introduced evidence that a cadaver dog honed in on the odor of human decomposition in the trunk of a car Casey had been driving, as well as in the backyard of the family home.

Casey Anthony was charged with her daughter’s murder in October of that year after

Caylee’s skeletal remains were found in a bag in a wooded area less than a half-mile from the Anthonys’ home by a utility worker who had asked police to search the area earlier that summer. A piece of duct tape was found over the mouth and jaw of Caylee’s skull, though investigators were unable to determine the exact date and cause of her death because of advanced decomposition.

During her trial, evidence including a strand of hair “microscopically similar” to hair from Caylee’s brush and air samples from the trunk of the car indicating human decomposition were introduced. But her lawyer, Jose Baez, argued that Caylee died in the family swimming pool and that her Casey’s father, George Anthony, sought to cover up the death. Baez also argued that Casey’s father molested her, which he denied on the stand.

The prosecution, meanwhile, described Casey as a party girl who allegedly killed her daughter so she could be free from the responsibility.

In the end, after 400 pieces of evidence were introduced, the jury of seven women and five men took less than 11 hours to reach their “not guilty” verdict, which stunned many Americans who were following the case.

Casey Anthony was sentenced to four years in jail and a $4,000 fine, but she was released shortly after the trial on time served along with credit for good behavior.

In February 2017, Casey was spotted at a protest against newly inaugurated President Donald Trump near his Mar-a-Lago resort.
