Fox Business host Charles Payne slammed Congressman-elect Jamaal Bowman over his “dangerous” claims about American capitalism.
Payne called out the incoming New York Democrat for being part of a “concerted effort” to attack the nation and its system of capitalism in order to usher in an alternative that has proved “disastrous” everywhere else. The host of “Making Money with Charles Payne” spoke with Fox News anchor Trace Gallagher about Bowman’s claims that capitalism is a form of “slavery.”
The newest member of the so-called progressive “Squad” told “The Root” in an interview published Monday that “our current system of capitalism is slavery by another name.”
Bowman argued that the country has “moved from physical chattel enslavement and physical racial segregation to a plantation economic system – one that keeps the majority of Americans unemployed, or underemployed and struggling just to survive, while the power elite continues to concentrate wealth in the hands of a few, and allow large corporations to pretty much run the world as multinational corporations.”

Payne quipped that it was “hard to know where to begin” when Gallagher asked him for his thoughts on the comments during an interview on “America’s Newsroom” on Tuesday.
“Factually — certainly within America — it’s, the majority of people are not unemployed, even in the midst of this horrible pandemic. In fact, most people in America have seen amazing upward mobility,” he noted.
“It’s not just the U.S. story,” he continued.
“Capitalism, particularly as rich nations have gone out and invested in poorer nations — you go from 1990, for instance, to now — one billion more people left poverty,” Payne said, noting that poverty “around the world is $1.90 a day” and that these people have now “entered into the middle class.”
“We’ve gone from 37 percent of the world being in extreme poverty to less than 10 percent now. All that’s driven by gains from capitalism,” Payne told Gallagher.
Reacting to Bowman’s remarks in particular, the Fox Business host added that “we’ve heard these comments before,” and that it is part of the “concerted effort — an organized, smart, brilliant effort — to bring down America’s capitalistic society and to replace it with something that has been disastrous everywhere it’s been tried.”
“Even when you hear conservatives saying things like — you know — ‘There is too much concentration of wealth in the hands of the few,’ Charles, do you know what remedy they’re trying to seek?” Gallagher asked.
“You know, the remedy, it worries me, because if you start talking about the redistribution of wealth and you start to say, ‘Well, who do we empower to make these decisions? Who gets to decide what is too much?’” Payne responded.
“I remember when President Obama made a comment very similar to that — you know — ‘When is it enough?’” he continued, taking a shot at former President Barack Obama.
“Well, no one is asking that about his book deals, about his TV deals, about all the other things that probably now, his net worth, is well over $100 million,” he said. “The idea, though, every one of those deals he is involved in are creating jobs and every one of the deals he is involved in creates other things that society may or may not enjoy.”
“The bottom line something comes out not out of thin air. A lot of folks are too busy focused on the envy of capitalism rather than participating in it,” Payne concluded. “That’s wonderful about being an American. You can participate in it. You can get your piece of the
