Senator-elect Tuberville hints he’ll support challenge to election results as McConnell begs GOP to let it go

Sen.-elect Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., has not even taken office yet and he’s already stirring the DC swamp waters.

The former head coach of the Auburn University football team was campaigning in Georgia ahead of next month’s run-off elections, where two Senate seats and balance-of-power in the upper chamber are up for grabs, when he hinted that he may support a challenge to the Electoral College results that certified Joe Biden as the nation’s next president.

 

In a video tweeted by liberal activist Lauren Windsor, Tuberville was deceptively asked if he was “going to fight to make this election right?”

“We’re going to fight hard,” he replied, prompting further questioning about January 6, which is when Congress convenes to officially tally Electoral College votes.

“You see what’s coming. You’ve been reading about it in the House,” Tuberville said. “We’re going to have to do it in the Senate.”

The suggestion would defy Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., warning Republican senators not to join a floor-fight to challenge the electoral votes in several key swing states.

His contention is that the effort may harm the outcome of Georgia’s run-off elections, and that it would result in a “terrible vote” for Republicans, forcing them to either support Trump or publicly buck him.

Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., has vowed to “object to the submissions of Electoral College votes from various states that, in my judgment, have such flawed election systems that their vote-counts are unworthy of our ratification in the United States Congress.”

And he needs a senator to do the same to require debate and a vote in the House and Senate.

McConnell came under fire for the warning, which came as he congratulated Biden, referring to the Democrat as “president-elect” while saying the Electoral College “has spoken.”

Tuberville’s campaign chairman, Stan McDonald, said Tuesday in a radio interview on WVNN that his boss was “seriously considering” joining Brooks.

“I think that he and Ted Cruz are the two best candidates to do this,” McDonald said, according to The Hill. “I don’t know yet if or when he will do this. He’s very seriously considering it.”

As for Tuberville’s thoughts about the November election, he’s right there with tens of millions of Trump supporters who believe it was stolen.

The video, reportedly taken Wednesday night, included remarks from the Republican at a rally for incumbent Sens. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., and David Perdue, R-Ga., where he expressed that view in no uncertain terms.

“We got to grab hold and hold on,” Tuberville said. “We have no choice. Listen to me now, we have no choice but to win this election. They are going to try to steal it, they are going to try to buy it, they’re going to do everything they can — lie, cheat, steal — to win this election like they did in the presidential election.”
