The government’s investigation into Hunter Biden’s tax issues began in 2018, but it went “quiet” in the months before the November election so as not to influence its outcome per Justice Department policy, according to reports.
“Two sources familiar with the investigation tell CBS that the tax investigation of Hunter Biden began in 2018,” CBS News D.C. correspondent Natalie Brand wrote on Twitter, citing two colleagues, Clare Hymes and Andy Triay.

Catherine Herridge, CBS News’ senior investigative correspondent, added: “#HunterBiden Two sources familiar with the investigation tell @CBSNews the HB ‘tax’ probe began in 2018. The sources explained that during the election season the investigation went quiet, otherwise known as going ‘cover’ + noted it would have violated policy at DOJ/FBI by taking any said ‘overt’ steps that would impact the election,” she wrote on Twitter.

The revelation that the Justice Department has been investigating Hunter Biden for two years — and purposely hid it from the American public ahead of an election in 2018 but also this year, when his father was running for the presidency — angered several people who reacted online.
How nice of the FBI/DOJ to follow their “covert” policy when the target of an investigation is connected to a high-level Democrat whose father would go on to run for President. In contrast, @realDonaldTrump suffered 4 years of non-stop [ILLEGAL] leaks that were found to be FALSE

The good news here is that one of those countries where Hunter engaged in “questionable” business dealings was China. PHEW! Thank heavens! Could you imagine if it had been a communist country with a history of stealing our IP, inserting spies into our gov’t or lying about COVID?

@RepAdamSchiff knew about it, he let him run his mouth during the impeachment. Both should resign!

I would argue that going “covert” did actually interfere with the election.

He was not on the ticket. If this has been a Trump kid it would have been viral.

Interestingly, Ari Fleischer, press secretary for President George W. Bush, retweeted a post from Australian journalist Rita Panahi that contained screengrabs of two Politico stories involving Hunter Biden: One that debunked the New York Post’s reporting on the damning contents of his laptop, and another from this week reporting on the Justice Department’s current investigation is about more than just his taxes.
The media is broken. Totally broken. https://t.co/JHBApUlXUX

On Wednesday, Hunter Biden issued a statement saying that federal prosecutors in Delaware are investigating him for possible tax crimes.
“I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs,” he said.
“I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” he added.
Hunter Biden has been under congressional scrutiny for months as two Senate committees led by Republicans investigated his ties to foreign business interests.
A joint report by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and Finance Committees found, among other things, that Hunter Biden’s financial transitions, and those of some of his family members, with foreign nationals in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and China, “raise criminal concerns and extortion threats.”
“These connections” involving Hunter Biden, James Biden, Sarah Biden, Devon Archer “are the vast amount of money transferred among and between them don’t just raise conflicts of interest concerns, they raise criminal financial, counterintelligence, and extortion concerns,” it continued.
