Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ginned up another firestorm of controversy online Thursday when she suggested that Republicans are not familiar with, or have never had, “working class” jobs.
College costs have exploded over the last 10-20 years & wages have not kept up.
It’s a totally different landscape and the fact they’re using anecdotal experience from 20+ years ago to reinforce their opinions instead of looking at current cost/wage data is disturbing.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) December 5, 2020
The conversation started the day before.
“Republicans like to make fun of the fact that I used to be a waitress, but we all know if they ever had to do a double they’d be the ones found crying in the walk-in fridge halfway through their first shift bc someone yelled at them for bringing seltzer when they wanted sparkling,” the self-proclaimed New York Democratic socialist tweeted.

“The thing that these conservative Senators don’t seem to understand is that I’ve actually had a physically difficult working-class job without good healthcare most of my adult life. I bring that work ethic to Congress & to my community. They sit around on leather chairs all day,” she added.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a combat veteran and retired U.S. Army officer, was among the first to respond.
“Between working my family’s hog farm, construction jobs with my dad, and the biscuit line at Hardee’s — not to mention running convoys in a combat zone — I can promise you this conservative Senator knows exactly what it’s like to work a physically demanding job,” she wrote.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who was the late Sen. John McCain’s running mate during his 2008 presidential campaign, also fired back with a healthy dose of snark.
“nar·cis·sist
/ˈnärsəsəst/
@AOC Listen sweetie, you know how many of us waitressed through high school to save up for college? Then waitressed and blue-collared throughout to get our degrees? You know how many hard working, selfless American workers cont to do so?” Palin began.

“With babies to care for, elderly parents to tend to, businesses to run, voluntarily helping others, working second- and third jobs, etc without whining and drawing the self-attention for which you’re known?” Palin continued. “Pulling one’s self up from the bootstraps is inspiring, rewarding – and expected. We call it The American Dream.”

Noted Rep. Paul Mitchell (R-Mich.), “This comment is ridiculous stereotyping. I delivered newspapers year-round on foot or on my bike for several years. Worked numerous doubles in Respiratory Therapy where a mistake could result in death. Worked nearly full time to pay for college. What do I not understand?”

“‘Physically difficult’ … The actual physical laborers you want to have pay for everyone else’s college tuition would like to introduce you to physically difficult jobs. You have no idea what those words mean till you have done hot tar roofing. BTW, why didn’t you buy Obamacare?” he wrote.

I waited tables for 3 years. It’s not a physically difficult job. Digging trenches for sewer lines in the 95-100° summer heat was a difficult job. Pouring concrete and laying block in the summer in Phoenix was a physically difficult job. Waiting tables was cake. Sit down Sandy.

Oh child! I’ve done janitorial work, landscaping, painting, shift work in a paper mill, farm work. But I also got my PhD and never borrowed a penny for my education. Just pipe down with your idiotic drama.

Sweetheart, doubles are nothing. You are were you are because of the sweat and sacrifice of real hard working individuals. Call me when you; put out a fire, roof a house, fix broken plumbing, fix a car, perform surgery, stand a watch in the military.

Double – hell I worked a triple (20 hours straight) then worked a double the next day for minimum wage and never complained. I can tell you that was a cake walk compared to being a small business owner. Lets see you started a million dollar business with $15k

Another “Squad” member, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), jumped in as well but made the issue about college debt.
“For one: this lacks understanding of the rising cost of college, working ‘nearly full time to pay for college’ isn’t enough to pay for college anymore,” she wrote in response to Mitchell’s tweet.
“I worked full time, raising two children & struggled to make ends meet. Today, 4.8 mil college students are raising children,” she added.
Omar, too, was lambasted.
Than don’t go to a college you can’t afford. Simple

Free college isn’t happening @IlhanMN, America doesn’t want Communism.
— Sean Antrim (@sean_antrim) December 5, 2020
State college is still affordable. The high tuitions are Ivy League. How about pay the professors less, no tenure and get rid of the fake classes that cost a ridiculous amount. See how fast you can reduce cost/loans

Sigh.
These sorts of tweets from you – Sigh
Please remember you have a constituency who expect more of you. These days, Representative Omar, even your phrasing irritates me. “For one:” is unnecessary phrase. Competitive whining with another representative is not problem solving.
