Voters who imagine that they control what the government does are mistaken. Our federal government is really at the mercy of the huge unelected bureaucracy, the Deep State, that represents the “big” in our bloated federal government. Everybody who lives within 15 miles of Washington is part of it, or so it seems. Of all the ways in which the Left is attempting to redefine America, its support for an enormous bureaucracy has been the most successful.
The people we elect—the president and Congress—are merely a front for the Deep State. The federal government has become separated from the American public that it is supposed to serve. Deep State power has reached the point where it is beyond the reach of constitutional safeguards. “As the administrative state grows,” says Mark Levin in Ameritopia, “the vote is less effective and the individual is increasingly disenfranchised.”
For the last 100 years, the Left has indulged its appetite for more and more government. “Politicians of both parties spent the better part of the 20th century disregarding the Constitution,” says Professor Ronald J. Pestritto of the Heritage Foundation, “as they looked to have government step up to solve every conceivable human problem.” From a nation in which corrupt politicians ruled with an iron fist, we have evolved into one where the administrative state makes most of the decisions with little direction from anyone. “There’s a permanent state of massive bureaucracies,” said Newt Gingrich, “that do whatever they want.”
Acting as a fourth branch of government, the Deep State issues thousands of rules and regulations that have the same authority as acts of Congress, yet are subject to virtually no oversight by our elected representatives. “The imperial bureaucracy has grown so powerful and arrogant that it doesn’t even feel like answering questions,” says Breitbart. “True accountability would interfere with the power of the State, so accountability is routinely evaded.” Its regulations impact every aspect of our daily lives, including the food we eat, the vehicles we drive, the air we breathe, the places where we live and work, the entertainment we enjoy, the way we raise our children, how we brush our teeth, and how we make love. In 1900, a person could function perfectly well with hardly any interference from the federal government. Today it is inconceivable. The government in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four monitors the individual’s every movement using cameras installed in the home. If the Deep State continues on its current path, that may be next.
As more publicly financed benefits were voted in and as more people qualified for those benefits, says author Charles Murray in Coming Apart, more bureaucracy became necessary to administer all of it. Now you have more people depending on government either for benefits or for their jobs in the bureaucracy. The federal government has become America’s largest employer, consumer, property owner, contractor, lender, insurer, and pension fund. This is a far cry from the intention of the founders. It is interesting to note that while everyone in the private sector has been suffering from the lockdown, Deep State jobs are secure.
Anyone whose life depends on handouts is likely to vote for left-leaning candidates who argue for bigger government. The political allegiance of the Deep State is to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party—”the party,” says Professor Edward J. Erler, “that favors the growth and extension of administrative state power.” In short, the Democratic Party and the Deep State have coalesced into a single entity.
The point of all this is that the federal bureaucracy functions as a shadow government. There is little or no oversight by the “real” government. In fact, the real government often uses the shadow government to accomplish dirty tricks. The Obama administration, for example, was able to push through much of its leftist agenda by delegating authority to bureaucrats like the ones at the IRS, who were only too happy to play ball. A complicit Justice Department under Obama appointees Holder and Lynch refused to file charges. One hand washed the other.
In 2016, Donald Trump came along and threw a monkey wrench into the Deep State’s plan to consolidate its power in support of the global elite. Trump’s promise to drain the swamp scares the daylights out of corrupt bureaucrats. As a direct result, the Deep State has done everything possible to block Trump’s presidency. No president has been compelled to survive against a comparable assault from the Deep State and its extra-governmental allies—media, academia, Hollywood, Big Tech, Wall Street. Amazingly, Trump took them all on and appeared to be winning. They tried Russia collusion and impeachment, but neither of them worked. Then, with the help of the media, they spread the fantasy that Trump was responsible for the coronavirus pandemic and that he didn’t do enough to stop it. They finally got him.
The end game strategy of the Deep State is to foist the Biden/Harris ticket and its socialist agenda onto the public by means of election fraud that is difficult if not impossible to prove. Attorney Jay Sekulow has warned of “an unprecedented bureaucratic coup undermining our security.” We are experiencing it now as we see more and more evidence that ballots were manipulated by the Deep State and its agents to benefit Biden. We don’t know yet if it is checkmate.
The question I would pose is, are the American people to be forever at the mercy of the Deep State? The time has come to recognize that our system is based on federalism, which limits the scope of the central government. Cato Institute suggests that many government programs ought to be terminated, others should be turned over to states and cities, and some can be privatized. Congress must pass legislation to facilitate these changes. That may be too much to ask from the sitting Congress. Whatever we do, let’s not ask the Deep State for permission. We won’t get it.
