House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy fired back at Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her claim that voters gave Democrats a “mandate” on Election Day.
The California Republican mocked Democrats boasting about the election results when, in fact, the so-called “blue wave” they had been predicting never materialized. McCarthy called out Pelosi for her claims during comments at a press conference on Thursday.
With what may turn out to be the slimmest majority in the House since World War II, and a failed attempt to gain a majority in the Senate, Democrats have been pointing accusing fingers within their own party after last week’s election.
“Pundits doubted us. Polls were stacked against us,” McCarthy said Thursday.
Pundits doubted us. Polls were stacked against us. Political so-called experts proclaimed we would lose. But Republicans have grown our party in the House and now, we will hold the line in Washington. https://t.co/YZYbKwnvDe

His speech was a recap of the election successes, as he praised the performance of GOP candidates and noted the House was poised to add 29 GOP women to their ranks. Every incumbent Democrat who lost their seat did so to a female Republican, he noted.
Kevin McCarthy takes a victory lap. “Not one Republican incumbent lost,” says the incoming GOP class will be the most diverse in history, with 29 women and several people of color (most of which are also women)

“Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, claimed that she was not only winning the majority, she was having two elections this November. That it would be such a large victory that she would guarantee the majority for the next election as well,” the lawmaker continued.
“They were all wrong. Not one Republican incumbent lost,” he said.

“I heard the Speaker call it a mandate. It was a mandate – against socialism,” the GOP leader said.
“While the Democrats praised socialism and advocated to defund the police, our members made a commitment to America,” he continued, saying the GOP is “eager and willing to show up for work, unlike the Democrats.”
“This election cycle has made one thing clear: the Republican Party is now the party of the American worker. That is the actual mandate that we had from the voters,” he added.
During a question and answer period following his remarks, McCarthy was asked about Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden who was crowned the winner of the 2020 race by the media even as votes were still being counted.
“He’s not president right now. Don’t know if he’ll be president January 20,” McCarthy responded.
Democrats did not take majority control of the U.S. Senate and actually lost seats in the House, prompting many in the party to blame the more liberal and progressive wings for causing the failure. But Senator Elizabeth Warren must have missed the Democrat hand-wringing over the dismal election results, writing in a recent op-ed that Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris won the 2020 race in part because they ran on a progressive platform.
The Massachusetts Democrat and former presidential candidate asserted in the Washington Post piece that the supposed Democratic win is a victory for “the most progressive economic and racial justice platform of any general election nominee ever.”
