Trump would be frontrunner in 2024: Marco Rubio looks ahead

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio believes President Donald Trump will have no problem clinching a comeback second term if he decided to run in 2024.

Though Trump has not yet conceded the 2020 race to Democratic nominee Joe Biden, Rubio told reporters Tuesday that if the president’s legal battles over the election don’t land him back in the White House in January, he will certainly be the “front runner” in the next presidential race.

The Florida Republican noted how Trump inspired the large turnout in last week’s election, and that, if things do not work in his favor following multiple court cases on voter irregularities and potential fraud, the road to 2024 will be wide open to him.

“He certainly has the right to do it,” Rubio, who lost his own White House bid to Trump in the 2016 race, said Tuesday, speaking to congressional pool reporters.

“I mean, Donald Trump, irrespective of the outcome of this race, however it turns out, in the end after all the legal claims have been adjudicated — Donald Trump brought in millions of people to vote Republican that had never considered it before,” the GOP lawmaker said.

“If he runs in 2024, he’ll certainly be the front-runner and will probably be the nominee,” Rubio added.

He countered his comments with a reminder that the 2020 race has still not been finalized, despite the liberal media’s rush to prematurely crown Biden as the winner even with pending court cases and vote counts continuing. Though there has been speculation that Rubio himself could be a presidential contender in 2024, the senator declined to comment when asked by reporters.

“But again I’m still being presumptuous here, we’re not even through with 2020,” Rubio said. “There’s a lot of other decisions to be made, so I haven’t even — honestly guys, no one can even start thinking about things like that until some period of time has elapsed.”

Rubio is expected to be on the ground in Georgia campaigning for the two senate run-off elections. Florida’s other GOP Sen. Rick Scott, the former governor of the state who was just elected Tuesday to serve as chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, will also be on hand in Georgia as incumbent Republican Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler face runoffs in January.

“Georgia is the firewall against the radical agenda of the far left,” Rubio tweeted on Saturday.

Others have also commented on a possible 2024 run by the president.

Sen. Lindsey Graham noted on Monday that if the president “falls short” he should “not let his movement die” and should “consider running again.”

“I would encourage him to think about doing it,” the South Carolina Republican, who just won his own reelection bid, said on Fox News Radio’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show.”

Trump should “create an organization, platforms over the next four years to keep his movement alive,” Graham said, adding, “Grover Cleveland came back. Donald Trump should think about it if he falls short.”

Rick Gates, an aide to Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign, also believes that the president would “seriously consider another run in 2024.”

“He’s going to continue to play a significant role in the Republican Party,” Gates said, according to USA Today. “He’ll have that locked up for at least the next few years.”

“I would absolutely expect the president to stay involved in politics,” former chief of staff Mick Mulvaney reportedly said in a recent webinar, according to the news outlet, adding that he “would absolutely put him on the short list of people who are likely to run in 2024.”
