S. Dakota Gov Kristi Noem dropkicks Mitt Romney’s rush to congratulate Biden

To the surprise of no one, weak-kneed Republicans like Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, are more than ready to move on from the Trump era.

Looking past legitimate concerns about election integrity, Romney was quick to offer his congratulations to Joe Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, after the media’s rush Saturday to call the presidential election on the Democrats’ behalf.

 

But leave it to South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a rising star in the Republican Party, to put Mittons in his place.

“DC Elites are eager to return to ‘business as usual.’ The 70 million Americans who voted for [Trump] are not moving on just because the media says so,” Noem wrote in response to a tweet from Romney. “Serious election integrity concerns (read Alito’s opinion) in several states that the media should be investigating.”

It’s fair to suggest that there are “serious election integrity concerns” in this country because politicians in Washington, D.C., lack the temerity to take on the challenge.

And while Romney can be counted among them, Noem has been beating that drum since Tuesday’s election.

Responding to Florida’s success in tabulating election results, the governor reminded followers that Trump is up against “rigged election systems,” while calling Democrat-run states out.

“Every Democrat-run state needs to clean up their election laws like Florida did. A fair process isn’t partisan. [President Trump] has been fighting the establishment, the mainstream media, and now rigged election systems on behalf of the American people and our way of life.”

Millions of unsolicited mail-in ballots flooded the playing field as one Democratic state after another changed election laws to extend the deadline for receiving them —  these ballots were a critical factor in Democrats flipping the battleground state of Pennsylvania after Trump held a substantial lead there.

At the same time, Democrats fight any measures to establish more secure control of the voting process, rushing to claim voter suppression.

Noem also pushed the issue in an appearance Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

Host and former Clinton official George Stephanopoulos was questioning the GOP governor about a surge in COVID-19 cases, asking her if she’ll work with “President-elect Joe Biden” to address it.

But she having none of it.

“This is all premature, this is a premature conversation because we have not finished counting votes,” Noem said. “There are states that have not been called and back in 2000 Al Gore was given his day in court. We should give President Trump his day in court. Let the process unfold because we live in a republic.”

“We are a government that gets its power from the consent of the governed,” she told Stephanopoulos. “That’s the people. They give their consent on Election Day. Election Day needs to be fair, honest and transparent and we need to be sure that we had an honest election before we decide who gets to the White House.”

The ABC anchor was quick to push back, suggesting there is no evidence that the election wasn’t honest, stating that he has spoken to Republican officials who claim there has been “zero evidence of widespread fraud.”

“That is not true. That is absolutely not true,” she countered. “People have signed legal documents, affidavits stating that they saw illegal activities and that is why we need to have this conversation in court. The New York Times itself said that there were clerical errors… computer glitches that changed Republican votes to Democrat votes.”

“You look in Pennsylvania, dead people voted in Pennsylvania,” Noem continued. “So, I don’t know how widespread it is. I don’t know if it will change the outcome, but why is everybody so scared just to have a fair election and find out? We gave Al Gore 37 days to run the process before we decided who was going to be president. Why would we not afford the 70.6 million Americans that voted for President Trump the same consideration?”
