Pollster Frank Luntz has not been impressed with President Donald Trump’s campaign but he is a big fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and pointed out an interesting political phenomenon.

The Republican pollster told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo on Wednesday that the president’s reelection prospects may be connected to Tuesday’s World Series win by the Dodgers against the Tampa Bay Rays. Luntz explained that, over the last three decades, Republicans have secured the White House in November elections every time the Dodgers have won the World Series.

Luntz was asked on “Mornings with Maria” about the latest in polling on the presidential race and the high numbers of Americans voting early in a contest happening amid the coronavirus pandemic.

As Bartiromo turned to Luntz to weigh in on what he is seeing in polls, he began to share a statistic by donning a Dodgers inspired protective face mask, causing the Fox Business host to laugh.

“Every time the Los Angeles Dodgers have won the World Series in the last 35 years, every single time they’ve won, the Republicans have won the White House,” Luntz said. “Now I don’t know if that is a correlation,”

Luntz is apparently a huge Dodgers fan and told Bartiromo that he was at the game the night before and “at least there was one celebration,” adding that it was “quite an evening.”

“What are the biggest issues of the election, you think? How are people voting?” Bartiromo asked the pollster. “Frank, these polls have been consistent throughout and yet there’s turnout that you see on the Trump team that continues to surprise on the upside. So what do you think?”

Luntz explained that, despite polls showing Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is leading against Trump, “only two-thirds of Joe Biden’s voters actually think that he’s going to win.”

“Conversely, 81 percent, four out of five Trump voters, think that their candidate is going to win,” he added.

“So, on election night, the assumption on both sides is that they are going to be successful. So, how the votes are counted, how quickly they are counted is going to have a tremendous impact on those first hours right after the polls close and will have an impact on what the expectations will be as the night goes on, as the days go on, and I emphasize days and what they expect to happen in the final count,” Luntz told Bartiromo.

He went on to speak on the president’s need to secure swing states, saying he “must win” Florida, Ohio and North Carolina to succeed.

“Those states are too close to call right now and every one of those states is required for a Republican to win nationwide,” Luntz explained.

Democrats, on the other hand, are “looking at the three states in the industrial Midwest: Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin,” Luntz pointed out, adding that Nevada and Minnesota are among the battleground states.

“Those are the states that Republicans are eyeing very carefully because they’ve got a shot in those two states. So, in reality, this is not a nationwide election. This is a state-by-state election,” Luntz said.

“By two to one, Joe Biden, his voters are voting early. By two to one, Trump’s voters are going to vote on Election Day. That’s what’s critical,” he contended.

“How those people participate,” he said, “if Trump’s voters come out to the polls, they still have a shot.”

Last week, Luntz said the Trump campaign was the “worst” he had ever seen and should be “brought up on charges of political malpractice” for focusing on the wrong issues.

On Wednesday, Luntz told Bartiromo that, for the “first time ever in American history,” one out of three voters are worried that the votes will not be counted correctly and one out of four voters are even afraid that their own votes won’t be counted correctly.”

“We’ve never had that concern in the electoral system,” he said.  “It’s something we should be paying attention to.”
