A pair of NFL announcers may have given some sports fans another reason to tune out of this season’s games.
Fox broadcasters Joe Buck and Troy Aikman sparked outrage with viewers after they appeared to insult the U.S. military by criticizing pregame flyovers at football games. While some social media users were happily surprised that the pair was “woke” enough to make the comments and seemed supportive of the Democratic presidential ticket, others declared that the disrespect was yet another political nail in the league’s coffin.
Buck and Aikman may not have realized that their microphones were on and they were being recorded on Sunday though it seemed like their remarks were delivered in a similar way to their regular commentary. They made the eyebrow-raising comments calling out the pregame flyover as a waste of money ahead of Sunday’s game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Green Bay Packers.
Even Joe Buck and Troy Aikman find pregame flyovers to be a little much these days: https://t.co/0IZL6GhmZy pic.twitter.com/G4EpB3SYtN

Many social media users, however, thought the comments were being made sarcastically due to the men’s Republican leanings.
Both Of You Are A Disgrace. #pathetic

Defector media posted the clip on social media and set off a wave of reactions, some applauding the broadcasters while many, like military veterans’ charity Code of Vets, slammed the men and the NFL.
“That’s a lot of jet fuel just to do a little flyover,” Aikman, a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, said in the recording.
“That’s your hard-earned money and your tax dollars at work!” Buck chimed in.
“That stuff ain’t happening with Kamala-Biden ticket. I’ll tell you that right now, partner,” Aikman added, referring to Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, though he interestingly named them in reverse order.
The comments drew a virtual thumbs-up from liberals who were impressed.
@TroyAikman just moved up a couple notches in my book. Easily a top 5 QB of all time now!! #NFL

Kamala-Biden Ticket? At last these guys admit who’s at the top of the ticket.

But many Twitter users were outraged.
yet another reason I’m not watching the NFL this year

Hey @TroyAikman You didn’t have a problem with military flyovers over your 27th Superbowl game! You had a big smile on your face! So now you think it is a waste and a joke? You are a weak spineless sell out to the nation! What a disgrace! https://t.co/5Jmy5SFbEm

Yet another reason to never watch @NFL again.
They know that people go to sports to escape, right?

Classless and disrespectful…
— TheDudeAbides (@Guard109) October 20, 2020
But some questioned whether Aikman and Buck were actually mocking the flyovers or “being sarcastic.”
+1. Seems we both picked up on that possibility … https://t.co/JTU1zUWBT3
— Aron Roberts (@aronro) October 19, 2020
Let’s check back on that after more info’s revealed, eh?
Aikman has donated repeatedly to the RNC and Republican candidates. Buck has been admiringly quoted in Breitbart about his “stick to sports” approach and his chiding other sportscasters to do the same.
— Aron Roberts (@aronro) October 20, 2020
I don’t believe he’s being sincere. He’s a Republican who is big on the displays of patriotism. Notice how he says “partner” at the end. It comes across in a condescending and mocking tone.
— Sludge Vohaul (@SVohaul) October 19, 2020
As far as the flyovers themselves, despite the seeming expense of the undertaking, they are not just a gesture to inspire patriotism at sports games and events. The costs are built in to military budgets as part of the training program for pilots who clock the air time in as part of their instruction.
Truth be told. Fly overs are often check flights. Each jet has to be flown and given a check monthly. They just schedule them over events. Not flying any extra hours.learned that many years back
— Jason Schmidt (@blindmanorv) October 20, 2020
If only they understood that those flights are part entertainment/part training. They HAVE to log a certain # of hours to maintain credentials. It’s either a football game or rush hour traffic. But he’s probably right..Biden/Harris wouldn’t do it because they’ll gut the military
— michael white (@WhiteZmrw5) October 20, 2020
These ladies and gentlemen are honored to do these flights. The are necessary for proficiency so if called upon they can defend millionaires like @TroyAikman or @buck from enemies.
