Sen. Lindsey Graham is locked in a tight reelection battle in South Carolina and the Republican just got a much appreciated boost in the arm with an endorsement from Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL superstar Herschel Walker.

Graham’s reelection bid is one of a number of Republican contests considered a toss up, and could play a pivotal role in determining which party controls the U.S. Senate.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, Graham thanked Walker for backing him.

Honored to have the great @HerschelWalker join #TeamGraham! Herschel is a college and NFL great, an entrepreneur, and a terrific conservative. Thank you so much!” he tweeted.

On Sunday, Walker shared a video online saying it’s sad how the “opinionated” media now pushes its own narrative, reminding followers that “the truth will set you free.”

Walker said Americans are voting on religious freedom and the right to free speech in November, few media outlets are giving voters the truth. He emphasized that America is a great nation where people of color can achieve wonderful things and that we have to elect someone who is not going to change what the U.S. represents.

Walker has a deep and abiding friendship with President Trump and he spoke at the Republican National Convention. A speech that Graham said should be made into a commercial.

“If we don’t make a commercial out of what of Herschel Walker said, it’s political malpractice,” Graham told Fox News host Sean Hannity in August. “I want people all over the country to hear what Herschel Walker said about Donald Trump [and his] 37-year friendship. I can’t get out of my mind Donald Trump in the ‘Small World ride in a suit.”

Graham has a tendency to say all the right things but not follow up with actions, and does himself few favors with GOP voters as a result. As chairman of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, he has dragged his feet for four years in getting to the bottom of what appears to be the weaponization of the U.S. intelligence apparatus to favor one presidential candidate over another.

But control of the upper chamber is critical for a host of reasons, the most important being protecting President Donald Trump’s flank if he is reelected — if Democrats gain control of both chambers of Congress there’s little doubt that they’ll fabricate a reason to impeach him again, only with control of the U.S. Senate they can remove Trump from office.

Expanding the Supreme Court is also in play, if Democrats control both chambers of Congress and Joe Biden sits in the White House.
