A conservative protester was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in Denver, Colo., at a “Patriot Muster” rally being held by Trump supporters, which was confronted by a group of Antifa and Black Lives Matter supporters.

The shooting was captured on video and spurred plenty of confusion online when the Denver Post originally reported that the suspect was a left-wing demonstrator. It is being reported that the shooter is a private security guard for local NBC News affiliate 9NEWS.

Denver Police Department later tweeted that the suspect “is a private security guard with no affiliation with Antifa.”

Denver Communists, Denver-Boulder Socialist Revolution and other groups held a “Black Lives Matter Anti-Fascist Soup Drive” at the same time as the patriot rally and the two sides were going at each other in the courtyard of the Denver Art Museum, as police stood nearby observing.

As seen in the video above, an aggressive man wearing a “Black Guns Matter” t-shirt was clashing with a group of patriots and he is heard challenging them to shoot him.

“Shoot me motherf*cker! Shoot me then,” he said.

“F*cking mace me brother,” the BLM protester then told the now-deceased man, who was holding a can of mace. “Walk up to me and mace me, n*gga!”

The two go face to face before others intervene. At this point, the conservative man is seen engaging someone offscreen and he walked off camera in that direction. A gunshot is heard and he is then seen falling backward.

The patriot appears to slap the security guard in a photo before the shooting and then sprayed him with mace as the shooting occurs.

In an attempt to justify the killing, Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King identified the dead man as a “fascist,” accusing him of assaulting the security guard.

It’s not clear what prompted the patriot protester to react as he did with the security guard.

Richard Randall, a radio talk show host for 740 AM tweeted that he was “defending himself.”

Police rush forward and the gunman quickly surrendered, holding the gun above his head as the officers descended on him.

He was taken into custody, along with a producer for 9News, who was later released.

The security guard was a Pinkerton contractor who had been hired to provide security for the station’s reporters covering the protests, according to 9News.

“A private security guard who was hired by 9News is the suspect detained by DPD,” the NBC affiliate said. “It has been the practice of 9News for a number of months to hire private security to accompany staff at protests.”

The security guard was identified online as Matthew Dolloff, although this has not been confirmed at this point. He is being held in a first-degree murder investigation.
