The campaign of Sen. Lindsey Graham’s Democratic opponent sent out what appears to be a homophobic tweet, referring to the long-serving Republican as “Lady G.”

The reference was captured in one of a series of text screenshots obtained by the Washington Free Beacon, which also noted that top staffers with Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison’s campaign have regularly used anti-gay slurs.

The screenshots show that someone associated with the “Jaime Harrison for U.S. Senate and the South Carolina Democratic Party” took conversations sideways if the text recipient voiced opposition to the candidate.

In one, after the recipient indicated he or she is “not a democrat” and that they “worked for Lindsey Graham for over 15 years,” the alleged Harrison campaign staffer responded, “So sorry to hear you wasted 15 years with Lady G. Best of Luck.”

That was followed with another text: “Thanks for letting us know, we’ll take you off the list.”

The Lady G reference originated as “an unsubstantiated claim from the gay porn star Sean Harding that Graham has solicited male prostitutes,” the Free Beacon reported.

Harding has said that Lady G was how sex workers referred to Graham.

Another text screenshot obtained by the outlet quotes “Kelly with Jaime Harrison for U.S. Senate and the South Carolina Democratic Party,” in which the sender argued that Republicans care only about “white men” and are trying to “kill” with COVID-19 to “protect their wealth.”

After the recipient said they were no longer Democrats after a summer of rioting and looting — “I can’t support anyone who is part of the party supporting all of the riots and looting” — the sender claimed Democrats don’t support such behavior.

The recipient then pointed out that the sender misspelled “Carolinian” and added that “everybody knows that Democrats are inciting the riots, looting, monument desecration, and BLM violence.” The recipient added: “We didn’t leave the Democrat Party…it left us.”

The sender then wrote, “You are just wrong about the violence…so sad. The Democratic Party fights for health care, workers rights and civil rights. The Republicans only want [sic] right for wealthy white men, all others they are willing to kill with the virus to protect their wealth. Time will tell. Have a nice day.”

Harrison is black.

“You’re nuts. That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard,” the recipient wrote in response.

The combative texts were obtained after the Washington Free Beacon reported earlier that top campaign staffers for Harrison often used homophobic slurs online between 2010 and 2014.

“Harrison political director Bre Maxwell and communications director Guy-Lee King used the terms ‘faggot,’ ‘fag,’ ‘homo,’ and ‘gay’ at least 12 times in tweets sent” during the period, the outlet reported.

In response to an inquiry from the outlet, state Democratic Party officials blamed the hostile tweets on a “rogue volunteer,” adding none of the messages were contained in official campaign text scripts.

“We have thousands of volunteers making calls and texting out the vote,” party spokeswoman Lauren Brown said. “We condemn any use of homophobic language or personal insults.”

Previously, as the WFB noted:

Bre Maxwell—Harrison’s political director—criticized the use of the term “ghetto” in a 2012 tweet “because ghetto is a Jewish term and the jewish Americans are wealthy.” Maxwell went on to praise anti-Semitic Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan two years later, saying he gave a “pretty awesome speech.” … Maxwell used the terms “faggot” and “fag” at least six times in tweets spanning from January 2012 to August 2013, while King called “getting involved with women’s problems” “gay atf” in 2014.

The outlet noted after its report that Maxwell locked her Twitter account and King deleted all of the posts in question, but not before screenshots were obtained.
