It appears that Chicago, which continues to suffer from relentless violence and high unemployment amid the coronavirus pandemic, now has a clown as mayor.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot drew criticism and derision when she appeared at a press conference this Thursday dressed up as a so-called “Rona Destroyer.”

She wasn’t alone. She was joined by Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady, who was also dressed in a clownish outfit.

They also gave out candy:

Thankfully, the clownish “Rona Destroyer” duo at least had some good news to share with locals. They announced that, unlike their peers over in California, they don’t intend to recommend against trick-or-treating amid the coronavirus, let alone ban it.

“Mayor Lightfoot announced that Halloween festivities will be allowed this year, with some restrictions. Trick-or-treaters will be asked to stay in groups of six or fewer, avoid sticking their hands into any candy bowls, and of course, wear masks,” local station KHON reported.

“Households that choose to hand out candy are being asked to either leave a light on or hang a sign to let others know that they are participating in the holiday. Residents are also asked to maintain social distancing guidelines and provide hand sanitizer to trick-or-treaters.”

That’s not bad comparatively speaking. Several far-left-dominated cities across the nation have outright banned trick-or-treating.

Despite the relatively good news, the presser still drew backlash from critics on social media who felt that her priorities ought to be elsewhere given the rampant suffering in her city.

Look:

According to an Associated Press report published this week, the Chicago black community in particular has been suffering from “a constant state of turmoil” because of “jobs disappearing,” poverty increasing, “police racing from one scene to the next” and people dying from the coronavirus or homicide.

It’s a culmination of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic itself, Chicago’s coronavirus lockdown measures (which Lightfoot hypocritically and unrepentantly violated), Chicago’s endless crime, the Black Lives Matter riots, etc.

“Auburn Gresham was hit early by the pandemic. COVID-19 infections rose quickly. Stores closed during a citywide lockdown. Then the agonizingly public death of George Floyd spurred protests that turned ugly. Businesses were set ablaze. As summer arrived, shootings surged in the 6th police district. Over three months, there were a shocking 175 victims. The youngest, 10 and 11, were wounded in a drive-by attack,” the report reads.

“Auburn Gresham has faced hard times before. Guns are easy to find. Fresh produce isn’t. Poverty hovers around 20%. But there’s never been anything like this: A once-in-a-century epidemic in a community without a hospital.”

While it’s not clear what efforts Lightfoot has made to help her constituents, what’s known is that she has a widely panned penchant for pulling attention-grabbing stunts like the one at Thursday’s presser.

For instance, in July she deployed a “Census Cowboy” to motivate communities to fill out their 2020 Census forms:

Two months later, her “Census Cowboy” was arrested for felony animal cruelty after he whipped and kicked an exhausted, injured horse while forcing it to carry him for seven miles during a “social justice” ride on a paved highway.

When President Donald Trump offered to send the National Guard to Chicago amid the BLM riots earlier in the summer, she chose to grandstand by proclaiming that she won’t allow the president’s “troops to come to Chicago and terrorize our residents.”

She posted the tweet above at 7:02 pm EST. About 30 minutes before she posted the tweet, a shooter opened fire, injuring 15 people, at a funeral in South Side Chicago.

It seems like no matter what the issue, Lightfoot prefers flashy, attention-grabbing drama to intelligent, well-thought-out governance.

Like her critics note, perhaps it’s time she changes her priorities …
