To hear Democratic nominee Joe Biden tell it, not only was every single coronavirus death in America preventable, but it’s President Trump’s fault that folks died from the disease — not China, but the president of the United States.

Biden spoke the whopper of a lie during a CNN town hall Thursday night, which is either an indication of how desperate Democrats are or how little respect they have for the intelligence of voters. Or, just the latest sign that concerns about his grasp on reality are not all that overblown.

“If the president had done his job, had done his job from the beginning, all the people would still be alive,” Biden said. “All the people — I’m not making this up. Just look at the data. Look at the data.”

(New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo may beg to differ, given his disastrous order forcing nursing homes to take in coronavirus patients.)

While Trump is immediately fact-checked by moderators in similar settings, who even interrupt him to do so, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper stood there like a toad on a stool and said nothing.

Even the fact-checkers at the Washington Post called it a lie:

Actually, Biden is making this up. There is no data to support this, even if the president had moved rapidly in January to deal with the coronavirus and been able to persuade the Chinese leadership to be more forthcoming about the situation. Even nations that have been praised for their handling of the pandemic, such as South Korea, New Zealand and Iceland, have suffered some deaths.

Biden went on to disparage any hope Americans may have about a COVID-19 vaccine, which the president has said could be available before the end of the year.

Talk about a negative attitude, Biden said on live television, “So the idea that there’s going to be a vaccine and everything is going to be fine tomorrow is just not rational, not reasonable.”

As for blaming Trump, the president has said on many occasion that his early efforts, which includes imposing a travel ban on China, saved millions of lives.

“We saved millions of lives by what we did. We shut it down. We saved millions of lives,” the president has said.

And while it doesn’t rank up there with the whopper above, Biden also told viewers he was the first in his family to go to college, which is not true.

The Post has noted before that Biden was the first on his father’s side of the family to go to college, but was not the first in his whole family.

Reaction came in fast and furious:
