Kamala Harris spotted in Miami being protected with firearm she vows to ban

Sen. Kamala Harris, who has said she backs legislation that would ban so-called “assault weapons” even as she supports efforts to defund police, was seen in Miami being escorted by a Secret Service agent who was carrying one such weapon.

Harris, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate, was seen leaving Florida Memorial University on Thursday, the Daily Mail noted in a report that included exclusive photos of the agent, who is carrying an AR-15-style carbine.

During a CNN town hall last year when she herself was a candidate for the Democratic nomination, Harris vowed that she would ban the military look-alike rifles during her first 100 days in office.

The California senator added she would take “executive action” to effect a ban if Congress failed to pass legislation.

“Upon being elected, I will give the United States Congress 100 days to get their act together and have the Courage to pass reasonable gun safety laws. And if they fail to do it, then I will take executive action,” Harris said during the town hall.

She added that if Americans “want to go hunting, that’s fine,” but that she nevertheless would push for new gun control measures and ‘universal’ background checks.

Currently, background checks are done on every firearm purchase made through a gun retailer, which includes at gun shows. A federal background check is not required for firearms purchases and exchanges between private parties.

“There are people in Washington, D.C., supposed leaders, who have failed to have the courage to reject a false choice which suggests you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away,” Harris said.

In 1994, a Democrat-controlled Congress passed and then-President Bill Clinton signed a 10-year ‘assault weapons’ ban that a GOP-controlled Congress allowed to expire in 2004. Subsequent scholarly studies, including one from 2001 — before the expiration of the ban — found that the legislation did not significantly reduce mass shootings as intended.

The Daily Mail also noted that Harris was also heavily guarded by at least two dozen police officers, though she has said she supports efforts to “defund” local police departments. In June, the vice-presidential contender voiced support for Black Lives Matter-driven efforts to get local police departments defunded, with the money instead going to ‘social justice’ causes and to finance additional social welfare benefits like housing.

“For far too long the status quo thinking has been to believe that by putting more police on the street you’re going to have more safety. And that’s just wrong, that’s not how it works,” the former California prosecutor said.

She said that “healthy communities” are better achieved by spending tax dollars on housing, health care, job programs, and education.

“You truly are the future of our country,” she said outside the university. “You are the ones who are going to inspire us and fight for the ideals of our country.”

Harris’ views on gun control and police funding have taken on outsized importance because many believe that due to Biden’s reported mental deterioration she would quickly ascend to the presidency, perhaps even before the former VP completed his first term.

In fact, Harris herself appears to have that eventuality on her mind.

During a recent meeting with Hispanic small business owners, the California Democrat referred to a “Harris administration,” not a Biden administration, before quickly correcting herself.

“A Harris administration, together with Joe Biden as the president of the United States,” she stammered, adding: “TheBiden-Harris administration will provide access to $100 billion in low-interest loans and investments from minority business owners.”
