Fans proclaim NFL ‘officially dead’ after players on ‘America’s Team’ get ‘green light’ to protest anthem

The National Football League is set to kick off its 2020 season this week after a long, unprecedented off season that included the cancellation of all preseason games due to the coronavirus.

Under the direction of Commissioner Roger Goodell, the NFL appears to be set on joining other sports entities in alienating millions of fans by rushing to embrace the left’s social justice narrative.

Even the Dallas Cowboys, known as “America’s Team,” will be protesting during the national anthem, according to players on the team, and for Eric Trump, that was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back.

“Football is officially dead — so much for ‘America’s sport.’ Goodbye NFL… I’m gone,” President Donald Trump’s son tweeted.

Cowboys player Tyrone Crawford told the Dallas Morning News that members of the team have been given a “green light” to protest as they see fit before games.

“We definitely [have] the green light on all that but also just trying to find something that’s going to make a boom,” Crawford said. “It’s not just going to be something that people look at it one time and kind of swipe by it, they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s great. The Cowboys did that,’ and swipe by it.”

To get a feel for the atmosphere in Dallas, the headline of the article that included the player’s quote stated: “The Cowboys shouldn’t need a ‘green light’ from ownership to protest against racism, social injustices.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been adamant over the past few years that his team will stand during the national anthem, but in the face of an onslaught of support for Black Lives Matter, he appears to be relenting.

Recognizing “the times we’re in,” the owner will attempt to walk a tightrope between supporting players who want to protest and potentially disgruntled fans.

“There will be no angst between me and the players, and no angst between me and the fans,” Jones said last week. “I would hope that our fans, which I think that they will, will understand that our players have issues that they need help on, and they need help from the majority of America. They need help.”

In 2017, Jones joined with the entire team as they knelt on the field for a moment of silence prior to the playing of the national anthem — the team linked arms and stood as the Star Spangled Banner played.

But given that the liberal media, which includes many of the reporters covering the NFL, are consumed with the social justice narrative, and that the sports world, pop culture, corporate America, and Big Tech are all on board, Jones really doesn’t have much of a choice.

Standing firm for what he believes in will leave Jones a pariah in Goodell’s NFL.

“The NFL stands with the black community, the players, clubs and fans confronting systemic racism,” the commissioner told reporters recently. “We will not relent in our work.”

Following the death of George Floyd, Goodell apologized on behalf of the league “for not listening” to players sooner — the national anthem protest was first started by the radical left former NFL player Colin Kaepernick.

Goodell also ran interference for players taking a kneel during the national anthem.

“It is not about the flag,” he has claimed. “The message here that what our players are doing is being mischaracterized. These are not people who are unpatriotic. They’re not disloyal.”

Of course, this message is inconsistent with Kaepernick’s own words and actions.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he said early on in his protest.

And last year, Nike pulled a sneaker featuring the “Betsy Ross” flag created during the American revolution after Kaepernick said it was offensive.

While stopping short of publicly embracing the Marxist-inspired Black Lives Matter movement, as the NBA and MLB have done, the NFL also announced last week it will stencil the phrases “End Racism” and “It Takes All of Us” in all end zones.

The NBA etches the full “Black Lives Matter” phrase on courts, while MLB has been stenciling “BLM” on pitching mounds.

The remarkable thing at play is that most professional athletes live a life of royalty, enjoying a standard of living that most folks could not possibly fathom. If ever there was an ambassador for the greatness of America, you’d think it would come from this pool.
