Dallas hair salon owner Shelley Luther is running for state senate in Texas to represent local business owners and individuals who want to make their own informed decisions during the pandemic.

Luther, a Republican, appears to be pro-choice as far as freedom of movement and face masks are concerned.

Moreover, Luther described Gov. Greg Abbott’s statewide mask mandate as “ridiculous” and believes that any further measures related to COVID should be subject to the approval by  the state legislature “otherwise, we’ll turn into a communist state.”

“I feel like if a business owner wants to require a mask to come in, then that’s their right,” she told Texas native Will Cain on Fox & Friends.

Luther requires masks in her own salon because stylists are in close quarters with clients for up to two hours at a time.

Luther made national headlines in May 2020 when a Democrat judge put her behind bars for contempt of court after defying the state’s then-shutdown order and refusing to apologize for it. She gained her release after two days from the Texas Supreme Court and when Abbott modified his executive order to prohibit anyone getting jailed for noncompliance.

Here is Luther’s brief press conference upon being sprung from jail:

As for why she is running for the open seat in Senate District 30, Luther explained to Cain that “I’ve had thousands of people reach out to me. I think people are really yearning for a real person in government, people that have real problems.”

She also revealed that if she was in office at the time, she would have supported a reasonable shutdown of up to one month.

“I think I would have done a temporary shutdown, maybe two weeks or maybe even up to a month, thirty days at the most, just until we figured it out. And when I mean figured it out, meaning okay, well, we will wear masks, or we will determine what is safe enough to go out or in.”

“I just think that adults should be able to make their own decisions after a 30-day period. And if people want to take the chance to go somewhere, that is absolutely their right to do so.”

Luther also recalled that she closed her business for a month, but after that, when other nearby businesses classified as essential thrived with no infections, “it was definitely fair for my business to be open as well.”

With six announced candidates, the special election is scheduled for September 29 in the GOP-leaning district.

“The winner will succeed outgoing state Sen. Pat Fallon, who is replacing Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe as the GOP nominee on the ballot for Texas’ 4th Congressional District,” the Dallas Morning News explained.
