The man who took video of another man who was brutally beaten and kicked unconscious in Portland on Sunday said that the city feels like and resembles a lawless “third-world country.”
In an interview Monday with Fox News, the videographer, Drew Hernandez, said the man might have been trying to defend a transgender woman who was being attacked and robbed by Black Lives Matter rioters when they began focusing on him and a woman who was with him.
The man got into his pickup truck and tried to drive away as he and the woman came under assault, Hernandez said.
“I think he just felt extremely threatened,” Hernandez told Fox News. ”They chased him… until he finally crashed. When they finally caught up to him, they went nuts.
“This was violent, extremely violent,” he continued. “Sometimes I forget I’m walking the streets of an American city in the Northwest. Sometimes it feels like you’re walking in a Third World county.”
A viral video posted online shows a man sitting on a street looking dazed just moments before another man rushes up and strikes him in the head with a roundhouse kick. The victim, whose face was already bruised and swollen, flies backward, his head hitting the pavement with a sickening thud.

After the kick, which appeared to knock the victim unconscious, the attacker stood over him and shouted obscenities. After he left, bystanders came over to help get the victim off the street and to medical attention.
Hernandez, host of the popular podcast “Lives Matter,” also posted to Twitter a video of what happened to the victim and his female companion before he was knocked out in the street.

Fox News reported that one witness had called police to report as many as 10 people “beating the guy,” the Portland Police Bureau said Monday. Others reportedly claimed that the man tried to run over protesters, but in another video posted online, the victim appeared to deny that.
Portland police said that thus far, the attacker has not been identified but that investigators are looking into the incident. The department also said that the victim is recovering from the assault.
“PPB Assault Detectives are actively investigating this alarming incident that resulted in a man being hospitalized,” Chief Chuck Lovell wrote. “If anyone has information about this event please reach out. Public safety is up to all of us.”

According to Fox News, information posted to a Facebook account that may belong to the attacker says he works at the Portland International Airport, but a spokeswoman said the person had not been employed there since 2016.
The attack was part of a string of violence on Sunday yet another evening of months-long rioting in the besieged Oregon city. Mobs of rioters have regularly set upon bystanders randomly, attacking them for no reason, Hernandez told the network.
“It’s literally like just one thing after another,” he said. “Just these random people, they start physically assaulting.”
The victim seen in the viral video, Hernandez said, was by a convenience story away from the main protests when he was attacked. In a news release on Monday, the PPB said he was taken to a hospital in the city and is currently recovering.
Hernandez likened the nightly violence and rioting in Portland since protests began following the George Floyd incident in May to a developing country or failed state where such violence is commonplace.
“There’s this sense of fear because the people are unpredictable because the crime rates are high and police aren’t there to save you,” he said. “That’s kind of the feeling that I get when I’m walking the streets of Portland.”
