The ex-husband of Jill Biden claims that his one-time friend Joe Biden “stole” her from him and that the couple has lied for years about how they met.
Bill Stevenson said in an interview with the UK’s Daily Mail that Jill had an affair with Joe that resulted in the breakup of his marriage to her.
In addition, Stevenson — who is set to publish a book that will provide more details — said that the story the Bidens tell about how Joe Biden fell in love with Jill after a blind date is a fabrication.
“I don’t want to hurt anyone,” Stevenson, now 72, said in Wilmington, Delaware, the city that the former vice president has called his home since leaving his birthplace in Scranton, Pa. “But facts are facts and what happened, happened.”
Stevenson would not reveal the title of his book, which he appears ready to publish himself. He also said he wasn’t certain whether to publish it before or after the November election, but that “it’s ready to go.”
“They can print 30,000 copies in 10 days,” he told the Daily Mail.
“I genuinely don’t want to harm Jill’s chances of becoming First Lady. She would make an excellent First Lady — but this is my story,” he said.
The Bidens have told people throughout their 40-plus year marriage that they met on a blind date after Jill’s first marriage was on the rocks, and have been together since.
“It’s not a bitter book — I’m not bitter because, if it wasn’t for my divorce, I would never have met my wife Linda and she’s the greatest thing in my life — but it does have facts in it that aren’t pleasant to Jill and Joe,” Stevenson said.
“People ask me how I can go back 40 years, but I am not, I’m going back 72 years to tell my life story,” Stevenson, who founded the renowned live music club near the University of Delaware called The Stone Balloon.
Rolling Stone magazine once described the club as “the best-kept secret in rock and roll.” Some famous artists who performed there include the Allman Brothers band, Metallica, Run DMC, Ray Charles, David Crosby, The Dave Matthews Band, Bonnie Raitt, and Hootie and the Blowfish.
The club owner said that he and Jill married in 1970, and around two years later they both began working on Joe Biden’s first U.S. Senate campaign when he was a Castle County Councilman.
Joe Biden was married to his first wife at the time, Neilia, who — along with their one-year-old daughter Naomi — would die in a car crash between his election and his swearing-in.
“Jill and I sat in the Bidens’ kitchen. We worked on his campaign,” Stevenson, who describes himself as a liberal Republican, told the Daily Mail. “I gave $10,900 to his first campaign — in cash.”
Stevenson said he originally wanted to work on the campaign of incumbent Sen. Caleb Boggs, a Republican, but the two parted ways after squabbling.
“I had a disagreement with Boggs over corruption in Delaware and he told me, ‘Get out of my office. Go work for that joke Biden,’ who was then at only about 20 percent in the polls,” the club owner said.
Biden, however, would win his race by about 3,000 votes on a campaign comparing his youth and vigor to the 63-year-old Boggs, who had said he didn’t want to run for a third term but did so because then-President Richard Nixon pushed him to do so.
Biden was 29 when he was sworn in, becoming the sixth-youngest senator at the time.
As for Joe and Jill getting together, Stevenson said he remembers the date well.
“I know exactly when it was,” he said of the August 1974 date. “Bruce Springsteen was going to play at The Stone Balloon and I had to go to Northern New Jersey to pay him in advance.
“I asked Jill to go with me and she said no — she had things to do, she had to look after Joe’s kids, Beau and Hunter. It was kind of a big deal to go meet Springsteen. I had no idea she and Joe were that kind of friendly,” he said.
“Then one of her best friends told me she thought Joe and Jill were getting a little too close. I was surprised that she came to me,” he added.
Stevenson said his suspicions were confirmed in October when a man came into his club and asked if he owned a brown Corvette.
“I said yes, it’s my wife’s car,” he responded.
“He said back in May it had crunched his bumper and they told him to get an estimate and he never heard back from them,” said Stevenson.
“I said, ‘Wait a minute, who is they?’ And he said: ‘Funnily enough, Senator Biden was driving.
“I asked Jill to leave the house, which she did. Her father was begging me to take her back when he found out what was going on. He asked me to give her a second chance, but I wasn’t interested,” Stevenson said.
“I considered Joe a friend. I’m not surprised he fell in love with Jill. Everyone who meets Jill falls in love with her immediately. It’s hard not to.”
