Former Vice President Joe Biden came under fire Thursday for saying that the black community lacked “diversity” of thought, and would later try to clean up his remarks, tweeting he did not “mean to suggest the African American community is a monolith — not by identity, not on issues, not at all.”

Assuming the presumptive 2020 Democratic presidential nominee wrote the tweet.

Given that the African-American vote will make or break Biden’s presidential hopes, the blunder was a doozy, but so too was the reaction from CNN anchor John Berman, who did his level best to run cover for Biden in covering the story.

As detailed by the Daily Caller’s Eddie Zipperer: “CNN anchor calls Biden out for a racist statement: 1. Don’t cover it until Biden’s staff has cleaned it up 2. Accept the clean up as gospel truth 3. Transition immediately to how awful Trump is.”

“It is notable that the Biden campaign or Joe Biden issued a personal statement for clarifying/sort of apologizing for suggesting the black community is not diverse,” Berman said. “It’s in the same vein when you say the president is going after Joe Biden on issues of race when the president goes after Joe Biden on issues of mental acuity or cognitive ability. There is some example of irony in the last 24 hours on this.”

CNN White House correspondent Abby Phillip would respond by panning what she characterized as the Trump campaign “trying to find something to really work in their effort to bring Joe Biden down.”

In adding that the campaign is pushing “this idea that Joe Biden is losing it, mentally,” she suggested that Trump’s blunders are on the same scale as Biden’s — maintaining a straight face, all the while.

“It’s very difficult to make these arguments for the president who himself has a long history of these kind of gaffes,” she said.

In a follow-up tweet, Zipperer added that Berman admits the statement was “factually incorrect,” while noting that the CNN chyron still read, “Trump claims Biden insulted black community.”

President Trump responded to the initial remark by tweeting: “Wow! Joe Biden just lost the entire African American community. What a ‘dumb’ thing to say!”

The president wondered if something was “going on with him” when he was asked about the comments by reporters, saying Biden “disparaged and insulted the black community.”

“What he said is incredible,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going on with him, but it was a very insulting statement he made. I guess you’ll figure that out, you’ll see it in a little while. It was a great insult to the Black community.”

Back to the concerns about Biden’s mental agility, the same media cabal now running interference for him managed to keep Hillary Clinton’s health issues off the front page until she was captured on camera collapsing into the arms of Secret Service.

The question is, with Dan Bongino suggesting Biden’s mental condition is spiraling downward and allegedly more severe than people are aware, can they keep it up for three more months?
