Dr. Siegel: Trump appears ‘very cognitively advanced’, has good reason to question Biden’s mental state

The Cognitive Wars of 2020 just got a little bit more interesting …

Speaking late Wednesday on Fox News’ “Hannity,” physician Dr. Marc Siegel suggested that the winner is President Donald Trump.

I spent an hour with the president. That’s not a cognitive exam, but at least that was in person — that wasn’t via a video screen. And I got an impression of somebody that’s very cognitively advanced in terms of the president,” he said.

The discussion came after a monologue during which host Sean Hannity dissected what appears to be presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden’s declining cognitive state.

After concluding his monologue, Hannity then brought on Siegel to see if the licensed doctor agreed with his assessment.

“I’m not a doctor, but I have observations. This is not just your occasional gaffe. I’ve watched Joe Biden over the years. He’s had moments, but this is now with regularity, almost every time he’s out,” the host said.

Siegel replied by stating that although he can’t offer an official “cognitive assessment” because he’s never met Biden, he does share the same concerns.

“I think the president is right to bring up that this is an issue that’s on the table in terms of functioning and running the country,” he said.

Getting into specifics, he then documented some of Biden’s medical history.

“VP Biden in 1988 had two aneurysms repaired surgically before the modern, most modern techniques came in. Studies have shown that there’s up to 50 percent cognitive impairment long-term following those aneurysm repairs,” he said.

“Also a matter of public record, former VP Biden has atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat. He’s on blood thinners for that. A major study called the Swiss Atrial Fibrillation Study came out about a year ago. Over 1,200 people studied. They found three percent per year, even if people were on blood thinners, ended up having silent strokes. And guess how silent strokes present — they present usually with cognitive impairment with faltering, with inability to think clearly.”

Sound familiar?

If not, below is about an hour’s worth of Biden speaking incoherently:

Atrial fibrillation also coincides with dementia, according to Hugh Calkins, MD, FHRS, FACC, FAHA, FESC, the Catherine Ellen Poindexter Professor of Cardiology and director of the electrophysiology laboratory and arrhythmia service at Johns Hopkins University

“There are many studies showing an increased rate of all types of dementia in patients with [AF],” he said last year to Neurology Advisor.

Continuing his remarks, Siegel noted that the study tested the cognitive state of participants using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test. That’s the same test that the president reportedly aced earlier this year and that he’s since argued Biden ought to take as well. The doctor agreed.

“That test that the president took is one of the things they used in this study to see if maybe you had a small silent stroke. I think it’s relevant. I think it should be done,” he said.

Yet when confronted earlier this week about the prospect of taking a cognitive test, the former VP threw a fit.

“No, I haven’t taken a test. Why the hell would I take a test? C’mon man. That’s like saying, ‘You — before you got on this program you took a test where you’re taking cocaine or not, what do you think?’ Huh? Are you a junkie?” he said to a black reporter.

Watch:

Responding to Dr. Siegel’s remarks, Hannity cautioned that it’s not known whether Biden has ever had a stroke. This is true.

He continued by pointing out that, nevertheless, the signs do point to cognitive impairment.

“I’m only giving a general observation, that listening to him, watching him, just going back four years ago, to me he’s aged dramatically. All of these gaffes together, he seems dramatically confused, confounded, tired, lethargic, out of it.”

“We don’t know anything about his medical condition, but do you have the same observations?” he then asked.

The doctor said that he does.

“I can’t diagnose him over a video camera, but … I’m concerned about a lot of the things I’m seeing, and I feel more towards the president’s point that it’s fair game, it’s something that’s fair game. If these tests aren’t done, then the voters have to decide right, but I think it’s right to have an assessment,” he said.

And that’s the bottom line. If Biden refuses to take a cognitive test, it’ll be up to the voters to decide for themselves whether he possesses the cognitive abilities needed to function as the president of the United States.

Either way, the former VP’s cognitive abilities or the lack thereof will be judged, because it’s a “campaign issue that can’t be ignored,” according to conservative columnist Miranda Devine.

“He might be riding high in the polls, but Joe Biden’s mental acuity increasingly is an issue in the election campaign, and growling at reporters who ask about it is no way to alleviate voter concerns,” she wrote Wednesday.
