New York City’s wealthy Upper East Side neighborhood sees 286% spike in robberies

A wealthy New York City neighborhood has reportedly seen a recent shocking spike in crime which included an armed robbery spree over the weekend.

Home to billionaires like Glenn Dubin, Henry Kravis and John Paulson, New York’s Upper East Side has experienced a 286% jump in robberies compared with the same time period last year, according to the New York Police Department’s 19th Precinct.

In the last four weeks, there have been 27 robberies and five of those were at gunpoint, the precinct shared on Twitter about the area which it describes as “one of the most densely populated residential areas in Manhattan.” Many of the crimes being committed in this high-end portion of New York City have reportedly occurred just a stone’s throw from the homes of ultra-rich residents.

There have reportedly been 14 gunpoint robberies so far this year alone, according to data from the 19th Precinct. This total far exceeds the number of gunpoint robberies in the entire year of 2019, which the department listed as four, noting that it is a 250% increase.

Over the weekend, the area saw a robbery spree as three incidents were reported in just a one-hour period, as a group of four suspects targeted several people in different locations.

Four people allegedly approached a 45-year-old man on Saturday about 9:30 p.m. around East 73rd Street and York Avenue, stealing his cellphone after flashing a gun. A short time later, and just a few blocks away near East 65th Street and Lexington Avenue, an 18-year-old man alleged a group of four people pulled a gun on him and stole his wallet.

Police were told by a man and woman, both 22, that near East 84th Street and Fifth Avenue at 10:20 p.m., they were robbed at gunpoint by a group of four people who allegedly took off with the woman’s cellphone.

One 17-year-old and two 16-year-old suspects were eventually arrested and charged with first-degree robbery, according to police who also said a loaded gun was also retrieved,

The precinct has been sharing reports of various crimes in the Upper East Side area, as crime figures for the month of July 2020 released by the NYPD show an increase in shootings and murders. The statistics showed 244 shooting incidents in the city in July, while there were only 88 shootings in the same month last year. There were 54 murders in the month of July as well, a rise from 34 murders in July 2019.

NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea tweeted that over the weekend, officers “removed 21 illegal firearms from NYC streets.”

The uptick in crimes has come after New York City’s Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio cut funding for the NYPD by more than $1 billion after weeks of civil unrest and anti-police protests. Many officers announced their retirements early in response to the lack of support.

In a CNN interview, the mayor blamed the coronavirus pandemic for the surge in crimes.

The Democrat also pointed a finger at Washington, claiming that a lack of federal support in the way of more funding is also contributing to the spike in New York City’s crimes, completely ignoring his administration’s handling of law enforcement.
