Two New York deputies’ vehicles set on fire in driveway, blaze spreads to house

Vehicles owned by deputies in a western New York county were torched overnight in an incident that is still being investigated.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing video surveillance footage taken from the area after a fire was started in a personal vehicle belonging to a deputy in the early morning hours on Sunday. The fire began in one vehicle in the driveway of the Clarkson home, then spread to another and a portion of the house, WROC-TV reported.

Brockport Firefighters reportedly responded to the call about a car fire around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday. That blaze eventually affected a second vehicle in the same driveway and part of the home was also damaged. The Sheriff’s Office indicated that the vehicles are owned by two MCSO deputies.

“Upon investigating, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office learned the vehicles are owned by two Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies,” the MSCO said in a statement.

“MCSO’s Arson Task Force, Criminal Investigations Section, and Major Felony Unit are investigating. A canvass of the neighborhood yielded videotape surveillance that is currently under review by investigators,” the statement continued. “Evidence technicians also responded to process the scene, to include photographs.”

Although the cause of the fire was not yet known and an investigation is underway, Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter denounced the “behavior” and vowed to find and prosecute those responsible.

“This type of behavior is extremely concerning to me,” Baxter said in a statement.

“Deputies and their families will always be my priority. Whatever the reason for this fire, know that our investigators are working diligently through the weekend to determine a cause. We are conducting a full court press to find who is responsible,” he added.

“Make no mistake, we will find you and ensure those responsible are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Baxter said.

Though the possibility of arson directed at a member of law enforcement was not directly expressed, the current anti-police atmosphere has led to many reports of violence towards officers and police vehicles. Last month, a Queens man was charged for attempted arson after he allegedly attempted to light a New York Police Department vehicle on fire.

“As alleged, the defendant selected a clearly marked NYPD vehicle, walked up beside it, started a fire under the vehicle, and fled the scene,” US Attorney General Geoffrey Berman said at the time, regarding Victor Sanchez-Santa.

“In allegedly doing so, he maliciously targeted law enforcement. Arson is also a threat to more than its immediate victim, with the potential to destroy and terrify far beyond the place where a fire is set,” Berman added.

Multiple charges were filed against protesters who were accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at police cars. Two Brooklyn lawyers were arrested for allegedly tossing the incendiary device into the parked NYPD police cruiser last month during protests in New York City over the death of George Floyd.

Several police cars were reportedly destroyed in Dallas and other cities as well during violent rioting in recent weeks.
