De Blasio says he’s got ‘no respect’ for NYPD union leader amid public feud and rising crime

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has had a contentious relationship with his police department practically since his first day in office, said Thursday he has “no respect” for an NYPD union president who has ripped him often in the past.

“The [Sergeants Benevolent Association] has only practiced division, they foment hatred … they do not try to help us move forward,” de Blasio said of the SBA during his daily press conference, the New York Post reported.

“They don’t try to create anything good. I have no respect for the leadership of the SBA,” he added.

The union is led by Ed Mullins, a frequent critic of the mayor who has called him a “liar” and “a disgrace” in the past over his decisions to handcuff police officers with his policies while coddling violent demonstrators.

In February, for instance, Mullins said rank-and-file cops were “declaring war” on the de Blasio administration after two officers were ambushed within a 12-hour period.

“Mayor DeBlasio, the members of the NYPD are declaring war on you!” the union tweeted. “We do not respect you, DO NOT visit us in hospitals.”

“You sold the NYPD to the vile creatures, the 1% who hate cops but vote for you,” the SBA continued. “NYPD cops have been assassinated because of you. This isn’t over, Game on!”

On Monday, Mullins responded to de Blasio’s tolerance of the destruction of monuments and statues, as well as other sites and buildings, by ‘protesters’ in response to the George Floyd incident.

“Truth is YOU ARE A LIAR you’ve allowed multiple murals, statues and government building to be vandalized and held the police from making arrest. You’re not governing just running your own agenda. A DISGRACE as a Mayor & Human being,” he wrote.

In late May, as Floyd protests raged in the Big Apple, de Blasio called for a “light touch” from the NYPD in dealing with protesters, a policy that was lambasted by the SBA.

“If Mayor DeBlasio wants a light touch then let him stand in front and take the first brick to the face. Or perhaps he can sit in a police vehicle and catch the Malatov Cocktail that’s thrown into it. Here’s the light touch, DeBlasio brain!” Mullins wrote.

The tweet came after de Blasio appeared to undermine his department, promising a “full review” of all officers’ actions after a night of violent anti-police riots in which hundreds were arrested.

“We have a long night ahead of us in Brooklyn,” the mayor tweeted. “Our sole focus is deescalating this situation and getting people home safe. There will be a full review of what happened tonight. We don’t ever want to see another night like this.”

Recently, de Blasio’s wife said getting rid of the entire NYPD would be “nirvana, a utopia,” though she acknowledged that couldn’t happen for the foreseeable future.

“That would be like a nirvana, a utopia that we are nowhere close to getting to,” Chirlane McCray said last month in an interview with Time magazine.

Also, de Blasio announced he would cut $1 billion from the NYPD’s budget in response to calls from Black Lives Matter supporters to ‘defund the police.’

He said late last month that the funding would be diverted to city social programs.

“My office presented to City Council a plan that would achieve the billion in savings for the NYPD and shift resources to young people, to communities in a way that would help address a lot of the underlying issues that we know are the cause of so many problems in our society,” he said at the time.

The budget cuts would come at a time of rising crime and homicides in the city, as well as increased violent attacks against police officers.
