Two police officers were shot to death in a Texas border town while responding to a domestic-violence call. The alleged gunman — 23-year-old Audon Ignacio Camarillo — later killed himself.

Authorities described the murders of the two Hispanic police officers as an ambush shooting. The slain cops from McAllen, Texas were identified as Edelmiro Garza, 45, and Ismael Chavez, 39.

Victor Rodriguez, the chief of the McAllen Police Department, said Officers Garza and Chavez were murdered simply for doing their jobs.

“We have lost two brave public servants who sought only to keep peace in our City,” Rodriguez told the Monitor. “They were doing their job. The person was a suspect of the incident, met our officers at the door, and shot at both officers. Both officers suffered fatal wounds.”

The incident unfolded at 3:30 p.m. yesterday after Officers Garza and Chavez responded to a domestic disturbance complaint. When the officers tried to enter the home, the alleged shooter — 23-year-old Audon Ignacio Camarillo — opened fire and shot both of them dead.

Shortly afterward, Camarillo shot and killed himself. Not surprisingly, Camarillo has a rap sheet and was previously arrested several times for assault.

Chief Rodriguez said law enforcement now face more dangers than ever amid the coronavirus crisis and the escalating demonization of police. “In the face of a pandemic, our officers went to a door today to serve,” Rodriguez said.

Officer Chavez’s daughter, Savannah Chavez, tweeted about her dad: “[I] love you daddy, see you soon.”

This incident is the latest in an alarming string of ambush attacks on police officers amid the Left’s “Defund the Police” hysteria.

The “Defund the Police” movement is being rabidly pushed by the Marxist Black Lives Matter movement. It is based on the false narrative that “racist” white cops are hunting down black men.

In reality, FBI data show that black men are more likely to be killed by other black men — or by black cops — not by white cops.

2019 nationwide study by Michigan State University and the University of Maryland concluded: “We find no evidence of anti-Black or anti-Hispanic disparities across shootings. White officers are not more likely to shoot minority civilians than non-White officers.”

The study remarked: “Our findings show no support that black citizens are more likely to be shot by white officers. If anything, black citizens are more likely to have been shot by black officers.”

During the past two months, after Democrat-run cities pulled police from minority neighborhoods, there has been an alarming surge in black murders.

Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said the Left’s reckless demonization of police is having catastrophic consequences on black neighborhoods.

“If Black Lives Matter was truly working for black lives, they’d be marching in Chicago or Baltimore or Cleveland [where black-on-black murders are soaring],” Kerik said. “I can give you 20 other cities.”

Kerik also underscored that the false narrative being promoted by Black Lives Matter and their media lapdogs is propaganda designed to sow racial division and destroy the country.

“I will give you a set of numbers that the mainstream media refuses to look at: Police officers were involved in fatal shootings 1,004 times in 2019. Forty-one of those were unarmed people,” Kerik said. “If you listen to the rhetoric, ‘every one of those people were black.’ That is a lie. That is completely false.”

Kerik continued: “Nineteen unarmed white people were shot and killed by the police last year. Nine were black. Everybody is talking about the blacks that were unarmed and killed by the police, saying ‘that number is systemic.’ There were 89 cops killed in this country in the line of duty last year. Nobody is talking about them.”
