Trump on NASCAR and the right to fly Confederate flag: ‘I view it as freedom of speech’

President Trump says NASCAR has the right to fly the Confederate flag (as it has for decades) because it’s “freedom of speech.” However, since NASCAR recently banned the Confederate flag, Trump has no issue with that, either.

Trump did not say that he supports the Confederate flag. Many leftists who today slam the Confederate flag as “racist” largely ignored it during Barack Obama‘s eight-year presidency.

“That’s going to be up to them. My stance is very simple: I view it as freedom of speech,” President Trump told NexStarDC reporter Jessi Turnure. “NASCAR can do whatever they want. They’ve chosen to go a certain way and other people chose to go a different route. But it’s freedom of speech.”

To illustrate that Trump was being consistent in his position about free speech, he said while he thinks NFL players should not disrespect the U.S. national anthem, “it’s up to them” if the NFL wants to separately play the so-called black national anthem before games.

“That’s going to be up to them,” President Trump said. “But people should stand proudly for [The Star-Spangled Banner].”

Meanwhile, sports analyst Jason Whitlock of Outkick.com said the injection of toxic leftist politics into professional sports will be their undoing.

Whitlock — who’s black — said the NFL’s decision to play the “black national anthem” before games is the result of a “lack of leadership” and a “failure of men to stand up for the principles that they say they believe in.”

Whitlock told Fox News host Tucker Carlson: “When I look at what the NFL is doing, this goes against every value that the NFL has built itself on. Professional sports have built themselves on the celebration of Americana, the ideas and values that best exemplify America.”

Whitlock said he’s concerned that black NFL players will stand for the “black national anthem” and kneel for the Star-Spangled Banner. Whitlock says this will alienate NFL fans (83% of whom are white) and effectively kill the sport.

“The NFL will run off a nice, fat chunk of its audience and will never be seen the same again because of the failure of leadership throughout the NFL,” Whitlock remarked.

Like other black commentators, Jason Whitlock slammed Black Lives Matter as a Marxist political organization that does not care about the black community, as evidenced by its deafening silence on black-on-black murders.

“It is a communist political move,” Whitlock said. “I’ve seen many of these [NFL] guys, they claim they’re in Christianity and their religious beliefs. Do they understand Black Lives Matter — Communism, Marxism — is anti-religious?”

Whitlock said the NFL bending the knee to the left-wing mob shows it has lost its way.

This is a historic failure of men and leadership,” Whitlock said. “This is cowardice at its highest level, this is the NFL jumping the shark and saying ‘we quit being who we said we are. We’re now something else because our money is on the line and we don’t stand for the values we said we stood for.’”
