Ohio town proclaims it will be a sanctuary city for statues removed from other locations

As cities around the country allow anarchists and Left-wing groups like Black Lives Matter to desecrate and destroy monuments to historical American figures, one town in Ohio is moving in a different direction.

On Saturday, Newton Falls City Manager David Lynch issued a “general amnesty” for historical figures, as well as declaring the town a “statuary sanctuary city.”

In addition, the July 4 proclamation notes that the town, located about 60 miles east of Cleveland, will accept all statues being taken down and removed, WKBN reported.

Lynch issued a general amnesty for George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Ulysses S. Grant, Patrick Henry, Francis Scott Key, Theodore Roosevelt, and Christopher Columbus, “as represented by the statues of these great leaders.”

The document also states that the city is “volunteering to accept these statues that have been removed throughout the USA and place them in a location of honor in our community.”

Continuing, the proclamation states: “Whereas the great leaders of our country and Western civilization, though flawed in many ways, have risen to great achievement such as the founding of our nation, the ending of slavery, establishment and protection of our national parks, the establishment of antitrust laws to protect our citizens from overaggressive monopolization of industry, and the discovery of the New World itself.

“Whereas these great leaders as represented by beautiful and artistic statuary throughout our nation deserve to stand in a place of honor and respect as a reminder that we as Americans can achieve great things,” the proclamation continued.

Lynch declared “Newton Falls shall be known as a Statuary Sanctuary City welcoming statues rejected by other cities across the United States,” while pledging “to place the statues in a place of honor and respect to inspire greatness and achievement by all who observe them.”

“We want to embrace the great leaders,” Lynch told Fox8/WJW on Saturday. “Did they have flaws? Yes, they did. We all do.”

Continuing, Lynch said he understood that “great leaders of our country and Western civilization had flaws,” but added that they still managed some great achievements.

“They founded our nation, they ended slavery, and established and protected our national parks,” Lynch added. “Yes, they had warts but they laid the foundation for what we have today.”

Lynch’s proclamation comes as statues of historical figures around the country are being defaced or destroyed by mobs of anarchists and BLM supporters, most often without any pushback from city officials.

Furthermore, at this point, the destruction seems unrelated to the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer in May.

Statues of Christopher Columbus, widely credited with discovering America, have been under assault for the past few years, though the attacks against Columbus statues dramatically escalated following the Floyd incident.

But also, historical figures like Ulysses S. Grant — the Union general who defeated the Confederacy — have been attacked, as have monuments to Abraham Lincoln (who issued the Emancipation Proclamation), and some to black troops who fought against the South.

That said, President Donald Trump is also doing what he can to help preserve, protect, and defend monuments on federal property.

The president signed an executive order last month providing additional legal tools to prosecute anarchists responsible for attempting to tear down U.S. monuments.

“I have authorized the Federal Government to arrest anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the U.S. with up to 10 years in prison, per the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act, or such other laws that may be pertinent,” he tweeted June 23.

“This action is taken effective immediately, but may also be used retroactively for destruction or vandalism already caused. There will be no exceptions!”

Also in late June, Attorney General William Barr announced that the Justice Department and FBI had more than 500 investigations open into monument destruction.

Some people have already been arrested.
