The 126-year-old flag of Mississippi faces certain impending doom thanks to a measure passed Saturday by the GOP-dominated Mississippi legislature.
The measure began in the Mississippi House, where all 44 Democrats and 40 out of 75 Republicans voted to grant the Mississippi Legislature the authority to suspend current legislative rules so they may then scrap the flag and replace it.
The vote reportedly happened a few short hours after Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, a Republican, posted a message to social media Saturday morning urging the legislature to overcome a then-ongoing deadlock and begin the process of removing the flag.
He further vowed to sign a flag-removal bill the moment it hits his desk.
Look:
The legislature has been deadlocked for days as it considers a new state flag. The argument over the 1894 flag has become as divisive as the flag itself and it’s time to end it.

After making it through the House, the bill then cruised through the Mississippi Senate Rules Committee and eventually received a 36-14 vote in the Mississippi Senate.
“Lawmakers in both the House and Senate are now expected to pass a bill that removes the current flag and establishes a path forward to getting a new one,” The Clarion-Ledger reported.
Why all this hubbub over the flag? Because it contains the Confederate battle flag in its left corner, as seen below. And because of the ongoing Black Lives Matter-influenced, Maoist-like cultural revolution sweeping America, this is apparently unacceptable:

“By changing our flag, we don’t abandon our founding principles — we embrace them more fully by doing what is right” Mississippi House Speaker Pro Tempore Jason White, a Republican, reportedly said in a statement ahead of Saturday’s vote.
“We’re not moving further away from our Founding Fathers’ visions. We’re moving closer to them. We’re not destroying our heritage; we’re fulfilling it.”
“Change is hard,” Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn, also a Republican, reportedly added. “People are going to resist initially, but I think over time it’s going to be proven that this was the right decision. We’re poised to reach our full potential now.”
Mississippi Democrats such as Rep. Jeramey Anderson eagerly agreed.

Congratulations Mississippi—we did it!

But not everybody was pleased with what happened.
Some expressed anger specifically at Tate, a man whom Donald Trump Jr. had vowed last year “will fight for the MAGA agenda” (an agenda that calls in part for respecting and paying tribute to American history) for reneging on past promises.
“Reeves had long opposed the idea of changing the state symbol, which bears the Confederate battle flag at the top left corner, unless it was voted on by Mississippians. In 2001, voters in the state had just that chance, but they ultimately voted to keep the flag as it was designed,” NPR notes.
Yet all of a sudden he’s adopted the opposite stance. Some feel it’s “unfair,” given as they’d voted for him in part because of his stance on the flag.
Look:
Completely unfair to voters, u backed the idea that voters should decide on the flag. That’s 1 of the reasons we voted for u. If u change it when it matters most, how is that fair to the voters who took you at your word. When we vote for candidates we expect them to keep promises

Governor, the flag should be changed only with a vote of the people. If you keep letting mob rule dictate your policies, the mob will never stop. Just like the phony mask policies that actually reduce oxygen intake to dangerously low levels causing other health issues.

I don’t understand why people are so quick to give up their rights to make decisions. Since March federal, state and local officials have taken away our right to choose and to be free. Voters should vote on it. Be careful what you wish for.

This is too big in this state not to be decided by the voters, you have to let us decide not force something down our throats

The people of Mississippi should have the right to vote. You should not be the only say so in it. Let the people vote!!

I am very disappointed with this Mr Governor. This issue is bigger than the flag, it’s about the process. This issue should be decided on the ballot like it was in 2001. I will very seriously reconsider my support for you next election.

Rep. Chris Brown, a Republican, appears to agree.
“I don’t think we can move forward together if we say, ‘You can have any flag you want except … this one,'” he reportedly said in a statement. “If we put the current flag on the ballot with another good design, the people of Mississippi will change it. … Let’s not steal their joy.”
