Sometimes you gotta fight fire with fire, and so conservatives annoyed by the left’s movement to topple historical statues have decided to temporarily adopt the same strategy but aim their grievances at the left’s beloved institutions instead.
Take Yale University, a 319-year-old left-wing Ivy League institution that, according to renowned conservative commentator Ann Coulter, deserves to be canceled, pronto.
In a column published last Wednesday, she argued in favor of “a bill withholding all federal funds from Yale University until it changes its name” because “[t]he school’s namesake, Elihu Yale, was not only a slave owner, but a slave trader.”
“Quite a dilemma for the little snots who attend and teach there! It will be tremendously damaging to their brand. After all, true sublimity for a Social Justice Warrior is virtue signaling and advertising their high SAT scores at the same time,” she sarcastically added.
202 years of celebrating a racist, genocidal slave trader is enough. YALE. MUST. CHANGE. ITS. NAME. #CancelYale

While clearly meant as a joke designed to highlight the irrationality and idiocy of the modern illiberal left, the idea of canceling Yale quickly picked up steam Saturday thanks to former Arizona congressional candidate Jesse Kelly.
Look:
Yale University was named for Elihu Yale. Not just a man who had slaves. An actual slave trader. I call on @Yale to change it’s name immediately and strip the name of Yale from every building, piece of paper, and merchandise. Otherwise, they hate black people. #CancelYale
— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) June 20, 2020
I take no pleasure in it, but if we’re tearing down the Confederacy, we’re gonna have to tear down a place named after a slave trader. @Yale must change its name immediately and issue a public apology. Or disband the university altogether. #CancelYale https://t.co/aeIvSWxv6x

ATTENTION: The @Yale Center for British Art is currently displaying this painting of Elihu Yale, prominent slave trader. Yale hates black people and thinks they should be traded as commodities. #CancelYale pic.twitter.com/sYa2AvvI0u

And thus began the #CancelYale hashtag.
As of Sunday morning, the hashtag had gone uber-viral among — hilariously enough — both conservatives and liberals alike, with conservatives tweeting it to make a point about the left’s irrationality, and some liberals tweeting it because they’re that genuinely irrational.
Here are some of the more notable conservative responses:
To be clear, I do not think we should rescind every diploma from Yale University just because it was named after a slave trader. I do however think every holder of a Yale degree should be forced to give a public apology and/or lose their job. Stop supporting racism. #CancelYale
— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) June 20, 2020
I’m concerned you’re going easy on them because you know a Yale grad. We all know losing their jobs is NOT ENOUGH JUSTICE for the crime of going to Yale. They must be arrested and of course police disbanded and prisons abolished but still arrest racists somehow 🤯. Understand?!

For those calling #CancelYale a troll
My question is:
If you believe in tearing down the monuments to confederate generals due to slavery
How do you *not* rename a university named after a slave trader, Elihu Yale?
— Cernovich (@Cernovich) June 20, 2020
“I went to Yale,” opens the money boxes at corporations.
You see the class warfare aspect of these fights over monuments, as working class people attack monuments other working class people want left alone, while ignoring the monied monuments like Yale. #CancelYale
— Cernovich (@Cernovich) June 20, 2020
WOW: Yale university was named after a man who was an ACTUAL slave trader. @Yale must immediately change its name or it is racist and hates black people.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, more just like this.
But as noted earlier, some left-wingers actually agreed with the call to #CancelYale, thus proving that at least they’re consistent in their irrational beliefs.
Here are some examples (*Language warning):
There is a very strong case to #CancelYale pic.twitter.com/O0MntS6avR

Remember when a white @Yale student called the cops TWICE on 2 black students? #CancelYale pic.twitter.com/cCcT9IuBgP

Fuck Yale, fuck Yale Law, fuck fortunate sons masturbating in a coffin to get clout In their bullshit ‘secret’ societies.
— Dr Brooke Magnanti (@belledejour_uk) June 20, 2020
Yale has nothing to offer except date rape and AIDS jokes. #CancelYale
— Dr Brooke Magnanti (@belledejour_uk) June 20, 2020
Irrationality department on line one …
Some who observed the phenomenon found it fascinating:
Wow, the #CancelYale tag is a fascinating convergence of right-wing trolling (Ann Coulter & Co. pointing out that Yale is named after a slave trader & should scrub its name) & leftists who agree

Was it, though? Or was it more-so telling of how deep into cancel culture that the left has fallen?
The left’s fallen so deep into the pit of cancel culture that a black school principal who once worked for Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition is reportedly currently being targeted for having simply told her students to not riot or loot during the George Floyd “protests” earlier this month.
“Several students told the Tribune they were offended by statements [principal Joyce] Kenner made in a video address about unrest sparked by George Floyd’s killing, in which she asked that if students do protest, they not participate in violence or looting, and said the way to seek change is to get a degree and get a ‘seat at the table,'” the Chicago Tribune reported about a week ago.
*facepalm*
Instead of a #CancelYale hashtag, perhaps what America needs is a #CancelCancelCulture hashtag …
