More and more, CNN seems to be doing away with any pretense that it’s an actual news outlet when it comes to covering President Donald Trump.
Casual viewers may be excused if they believe the network dedicates 24/7 coverage to destroying the Trump presidency, as it is all bad news all the time when it comes to the nations’ 45th president.
After giving disgruntled former national security adviser John Bolton’s new book red carpet treatment, a book that features enough scandalous allegations against Trump to ensure brisk sales — one such claim being that he asked China to help him with the 2020 election — CNN apparently had little interest in offering the administration an opportunity to refute the claims.
That’s according to a spokesman who spoke the Washington Free Beacon Thursday afternoon, insisting that CNN is refusing to give the White House airtime.
The network reportedly told the White House it is “focused on other breaking news.”
It’s not clear which officials were being offered to CNN to defend the president or to name the shows that declined their requests, the Free Beacon reported. CNN did not respond to their request for comment.
More from the Free Beacon on CNN’s Thursday coverage:
A review of CNN’s Thursday programming found Bolton’s book was featured as one of the top stories throughout the day, serving as the subject of nearly a dozen segments—including a lengthy interview on the book with Washington Post columnist Max Boot, who called Bolton’s criticism of the president “unprecedented.” Other topics given attention were Iceland’s efforts to scale back its coronavirus shutdowns, the upcoming Juneteenth holiday, and whether the NFL will be able to return to play next season.
As the article noted, expect to see a healthy dose of Bolton on Sunday’s political talk shows.
President Trump has fallen back on his usual platform on Twitter, where he has over 82 million followers, to blast Bolton, calling his upcoming book a “compilation of lies and made up stories” serving as retribution for getting fired.
“Bolton’s book, which is getting terrible reviews, is a compilation of lies and made up stories, all intended to make me look bad,” the president said. “Many of the ridiculous statements he attributes to me were never made, pure fiction. Just trying to get even for firing him like the sick puppy he is!”

And that was the cleaned-up tweet. In an earlier offering, Trump ripped into Bolton, calling him a “wacko” and a “dope” who was “happily dumped.”
“Wacko John Bolton’s ‘exceedingly tedious'(New York Times) book is made up of lies & fake stories. Said all good about me, in print, until the day I fired him. A disgruntled boring fool who only wanted to go to war. Never had a clue, was ostracized & happily dumped. What a dope!” he tweeted.

In a pair of additional tweets, the president remarked on how Bolton had a disastrous effect on his talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jung Un.

In what may or may not be related, the president re-tweeted a fun meme video that depicted the type of “fake news” you can expect from CNN.
The clip gets in a dig at the network in reporting on a “terrified todler [SIC]” running away from a “racist baby” who’s “probably a Trump voter.”
And while it went viral, Twitter’s liberal censor gods slapped it with a “manipulated media” label.
