Journalist at NBC who attempted to get Google to defund The Federalist identified

The NBC writer who produced the story that, at first glance, seemed to drive Google’s decision to defund the website Zero Hedge and to warn conservative site The Federalist has been identified as a British journalist with very little experience.

As reported by the UK’s Daily Mail, the writer is Adele-Momoko Fraser, who, in her story, quoted a Google spokeswoman as saying that both websites were stripped of their monetization via Google Ads. 

Fraser is thought to be around 25 years old and in journalism for only two years. She’s been working for NBC in London for around six months, the Daily Mail reported. Prior to that, she worked for a pair of British TV networks — Channel 4 and Sky.

The neophyte journalist also reportedly graduated with a Masters in Journalism from London’s City University in 2018. Beforehand, she earned an undergraduate degree in Politics and International Relations from the University of Bristol.

Fraser also appears to have grown up well. The Daily Mail reports that she attended private school in Dulwich, South London, where tuition is around $7,500 per year. She “is understood to live in a $3 million home in Hampstead, North London, with her mother,” the UK news site said.

NBC reportedly told the Daily Mail on Wednesday that Fraser was seeking a company statement from Google and that she did not “collaborate or purposely attempt to get these sites demonetized” when she sent them a report by The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH).

But after Google said it had de-monetized both websites, Fraser tweeted the NBC story and appeared to celebrate it, thanking the center for “collaborating” and using the hashtag “BlackLivesMatter.” The original tweet appears to have been deleted, and another version posted without the hashtag.

She later issued a ‘clarification’ saying that she didn’t “collaborate on the research itself.”

“Additionally – after the publication of this story, Google backtracked, clarifying that The Federalist had been warned about policy violations but still had time to address them. It now has three days to remove the violations before a ban goes into effect,” she wrote.

The center was founded in 2017 by a former journalist, Imran Ahmed, who used to write for the Left-wing Huffington Post. In addition, he is a member of the British government’s Steering Committee, a counterterrorism organization.

“The CCDH has a campaign called Stop Funding Fake News which calls on companies to pull ads from platforms like Facebook and Google because they can end up running on what it deems to be ‘fake news’ websites,” the Daily Mail reports.

Interestingly, however, the organization has taken a pass on numerous false reports regarding President Donald Trump and his administration from The New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, and even NBC.

In the end, only Zero Hedge was defunded. The Federalist’s co-founder, Sean Davis, told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson on Tuesday that the tech giant was really more concerned about what was written in the comments section following stories. He said that, for now, the comments section had been removed.

But he blasted NBC and, by association Fraser, for using a “foreign entity” in an attempt to censor American media outlets then disagreed with politically.

“We were subjected to all these demands in 2016 and after to get rid of foreign interference in our elections and here we have a foreign unit at NBC … seeking with another left-wing foreign group to deplatform an American media organization, one that’s supposed to be defended and made sacrosanct under the First Amendment,” Davis said.

“And it’s not just that somebody came after us … the whiny cry-bullies of the Left do this all the time to their enemies. They can’t win arguments so they try to shut them down, but to see this come from actual journalists who claim to believe in the First Amendment, that was remarkable.”

In the report cited by Fraser, the CCDH listed 10 websites that are being targeted for defunding. All are conservative or right-leaning, politically: American Greatness, Moonbattery, American Thinker, Big League Politics, Zero Hedge, WND, The Washington Standard, Gateway Pundit, Breitbart and The Federalist.

British TV personality Rachel Riley, who is a patron of CCDH, defended the effort and criticized Google for allowing The Federalist to continue using Google Ads, comparing the site and others like it to “skinheads.”
