Pastor Scott testifies to Congress: Police defunding ‘has already happened, proven to be an epic failure’

The Democratic Party rushed before the camera this week to capitalize on the racial strife in the country, as the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing Wednesday on racial profiling and police brutality.

Led by Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., one of the party’s ringleaders in the partisan ruse to impeach President Donald Trump, Democrats opened proceedings with an emotional statement from George Floyd’s younger brother.

Republicans called three witnesses, to include Pastor Darrell Scott, the co-founder of President Trump’s National Diversity Coalition — Scott once said Trump “has been the most pro-black president in my lifetime.”

Scott, a pastor at New Spirit Revival Center, opened with a focus on Democrats calling to defund or disband law enforcement, a measure that will harm low-income minority communities most.

“I want to begin by stating the prospect of defunding and or dismantling police forces across the country is one of the most unwise, irresponsible proposals by American politicians in our nation’s history, and makes absolutely no sense at all,” Pastor Scott said.

“I believe it is nothing short of politicizing current social events in an effort to garner votes during this election season,” Scott continued. “I also believe it is a reactionary measure that can and will result in short and long-term damage to American society, particularly in our inner cities and urban communities.”

He recognized that excessive force, racial profiling and harsh treatment of minorities by police is a real problem that “must be eliminated immediately,” adding that he has experienced times where he was racially profiled.

“I can testify of times in my life where I was pulled over for driving while black,” Scott continued. “I can testify giving my grandson, who is now driving age, the talk of how to properly behave if pulled over by police, because he had the question of a very real fear of the possibility of death at the hands of police.”

The pastor said he or any number of other black men could have been George Floyd.

“However, I do not recommend throwing the baby out with the bathwater by labeling all police officers as bad cops simply because of the bad actions of a rogue segment of those whose job is supposed to be to protect and serve American citizens,” he insisted.

In strong testimony, Scott said in some inner-city communities across America, there is a great need for increased funding for police and increased police presence.

“As one who was formally in this street life years ago — I might be a pastor but I didn’t come down from Heaven, I came up out of Hell with the rest of everybody else,” Scott said. “I was formally in that street life and I know much about the criminal element, and I can state definitively the criminal element in and of society will enjoy nothing better than the reduction in police presence and police power.”

The end result of defunding police will be citizens taking the law into their own hands, he said, adding that an absence of police presence will result in “domestic terrorism, mob rule, gang rule, neighborhood intimidation, oppression, and vigilantism.”

Citing his own city of Cleveland as an example, he detailed the massive cuts to police.

“The murder rates have climbed,” he testified. “The property crime is at record levels. Aggravated robbery statistics are higher. Drug use and drug sales and abuse is higher. Cleveland went from a relatively safe city per capita to an unbelievably unsafe city.”

“Cleveland now has a higher murder rate per 100,000 residents than Chicago does,” he added.

Pastor Scott then touched on a factor getting little attention amid all the out-crying from political circles.

“I believe the police departments are only as effective as politicians, and their appointees allow them to be,” he said. “Politicians end appointees are responsible for the state of their police departments.”

“Law-abiding citizens, and I’ve spoken to a great deal of them, overwhelmingly think defunding or disbanding police departments is a horrible idea,” he stressed, adding that this “has already happened, and proven to be an epic failure.”

“I recommend and agree with the fact that police reform, or better yet, police revisions should be enacted,” Scott concluded. “But it has to be one sensitive to the stress, tension, pressure, and paranoia policing produces. The fact that on any given day, any given call, stop, can result in an officer’s death and be very challenging mentally.”
