As riots and demonstrations continue around the country in protest over George Floyd’s death, who died as he was being held to the pavement by a white police officer, two black suspects have been arrested for allegedly shooting a white female cop in Michigan – without sparking similar violence.
As reported by MLive on Tuesday, Kordney Antwoine McDonald of Ypsilanti and Koby Ryan Falls of Monroe were charged with shooting Cpl. Renae Peterson of the Monroe City Police Department on Sunday.
McDonald reportedly faces 17 counts that include charges of assault with murderous intent, assault on a police officer, and felony weapons charges. Falls, meanwhile, faces 13 similar counts that also include a concealed carry violation.

Peterson was responding to an armed carjacking call in Monroe when one of the two suspects began shooting at her after she found the stolen vehicle and got out of her patrol car, police said. Peterson was shot multiple times and taken to a Toledo-area hospital, police said.
The officer “ordered them both from the vehicle,” Allison Arnold, an assistant prosecutor, told The Associated Press. “They both ran, and Mr. McDonald struck her with a firearm, fired several shots at her.”
Last week, Peterson — a 16-year veteran of the department — remained hospitalized in stable condition. Her husband, Monroe Police Lt. Ken Peterson, said he expects his wife to make a full recovery.
“The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office gratefully acknowledges the gallant service of Cpl. Peterson, and many thousands of law enforcement officers like her across our nation, who are in harm’s way every day,” Michael G. Roehrig, Monroe County prosecutor, said. “As the ‘front line,’ they serve and protect our communities courageously and selflessly, all too frequently putting their lives in grave danger.”?
According to a fundraiser set up to help the couple with medical expenses, Cpl. Peterson earned the title Officer of the Year in 2017.
The situations involving the Minnesota and Michigan incidents are not the same in that in the former, a suspect lost his life, and the white officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with third-degree murder along with manslaughter.
What’s also different is that in the Michigan incident, black suspects have been charged with attempting to kill a white police officer, but there are no race-related riots or protests taking place in response, nor any suggestion that the alleged crime was racially motivated.
In fact, there is no evidence, in either case, that race played a role in what happened. From all reports thus far, Chauvin, who was also fired from his job immediately after video of him kneeling over Floyd went viral, had no history of race-related incidents or disciplinary actions.
As for the suspects who are charged with shooting Cpl. Peterson, there are no demands that the legal system be bypassed or pronouncements that they are guilty before a single piece of testimony or evidence has been introduced in a court of law.
By comparison, many Left-wing Democrats and ‘civil rights leaders’ are already calling Chauvin a “murderer” and calling for him to be imprisoned, or worse, before he’s been given a chance to defend himself before a judge and jury of his peers.
