George Floyd autopsy says no physical findings support traumatic asphyxia or strangulation; health and police restraint contributed to death

Preliminary autopsy results from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner suggest George Floyd’s death wasn’t the result of him being unable to breathe, but the deceased man’s family doesn’t believe it and has hired the renowned forensic pathologist who said Jeffrey Epstein was murdered to conduct his own autopsy.

The autopsy revealed no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation,” the charging document that was used to arrest now-terminated Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin reportedly reads.

Mr. Floyd had underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease. The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.”

These findings are highly relevant because they make it much less likely that prosecutors could convict Chauvin for first-degree or second-degree murder, ergo the most probable reason why they chose to charge him with just third-degree murder and manslaughter instead.

However, Floyd’s family has contracted a renowned forensic pathologist, Dr. Michael Baden, to conduct his own independent autopsy.

“We’ve just spoken recently with the district attorney,” family attorney Ben Crump reportedly said at a press conference Friday. “We’re going to take custody back of his body, and we’re bringing in Dr. Michael Baden to perform an independent autopsy.”

He added, “The family does not trust anything coming from the Minneapolis Police Department. How can they?”

Besides being known as the former chief medical examiner of New York City, Baden is also recognized nationally for the testimony he provided during O.J. Simpson’s trial decades ago and for conducting independent autopsies of deceased criminal suspects Eric Garner and Mike Brown.

In Garner’s case, he ultimately wound up agreeing with the New York City Medical Examiner’s Officer.

“The medical examiner previously ruled Garner’s death a homicide, saying the father of six died from neck compression due to a chokehold. His asthma and obesity were contributing factors to but did not cause his death, the medical examiner determined,” local station WNBC reported in September of 2014.

“[Baden] … called the Garner autopsy ‘excellent’ and agreed with the medical examiner’s findings that ‘neck compressions’ led to his death.”

But five years later in October of 2019, two months after the death of pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, Baden reached an opposite conclusion from the New York City Medical Examiner’s Officer after he was allowed to watch the office’s autopsy.

While the office argued that the autopsy showed that Epstein had hanged himself, Baden was adamant that it showed otherwise.

“I think the evidence points more to homicide than suicide,” he said during an appearance on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends.”

He then pointed to three fractures on Epstein’s neck that he argued were “very unusual for suicide.”

“Those three fractures are extremely unusual in suicidal hangings and could occur much more commonly in homicidal strangulation,” he said. “Hanging does not cause these broken bones, and homicide does. Usually two bones, even three, a huge amount of pressure was applied.”

His past findings suggest there’s no telling whether he’ll ultimately agree or disagree with the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

As it stands, a large number of people from all walks of life disagree with the results.

Look (*Language warning):

The results of the autopsy are particularly frustrating to many because while it avoids blaming traumatic asphyxia for Floyd’s death, it openly admits that Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. Moreover, Floyd was reportedly unresponsive for the latter 2 minutes and 53 seconds.
