MSNBC’s Dr. Vin Gupta earned a round of social media mockery after he made the case for mandatory face-mask usage.
The pulmonary doctor warned of serious risks from not wearing protective face masks amid the coronavirus pandemic, calling for lawmakers to require Americans to wear them by passing laws like those that banned smoking in public spaces.

“We should make masks mandatory in public, just like we ban indoor smoking,” Gupta said in a recent appearance on MSNBC.
“Because you know what? You shouldn’t have to breathe somebody else’s secondhand smoke. I shouldn’t have to breathe exhaled COVID-19 in somebody’s breath,” the medical expert declared.
“So we should institute mandatory masks in public when you can’t guarantee social distancing,” Gupta continued, expanding on the scope of his suggestion. “That means retail stores, that means public transportation, workplaces. That’s absolutely where we should be headed. It makes no sense why we’re not already there.”
The lung specialist accused people of “flouting” the rules by not wearing masks where coronavirus guidelines direct them to do so, citing an unrelated story of a security guard at a Family Dollar store in Flint, Michigan who was shot to death after he argued with a customer about wearing a face mask.
Although the incident had no bearing on the health safety of wearing masks, Gupta went on to declare that “we need to not put the onus on security guards and local outlets to enforce this policy or to encourage Americans to abide by it.”
“It’s all in our best interest that we wear masks. The evidence is overwhelming. We just need governors to do their job,” he concluded.
In another interview, Gupta pompously asked, “Is it more inconvenient to wear a mask or be on a ventilator?”

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam apparently agrees as he announced Tuesday that by the end of this week, face masks will be mandatory at some times in the state. Everyone 10 and older is required to wear a mask and they must be worn in essential and non-essential stores, as well as salons, barbershops, on public transportation. Looking ahead, the rule will apply to entertainment facilities as well, once they are even allowed to reopen.

The Democrat governor, who was called out himself for being seen on a Virginia beach without a face mask, will be enforcing the rule through the Virginia Department of Health. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor which can include jail time.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain,” claiming that “the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity—for example, speaking, coughing, or sneezing—even if those people are not exhibiting symptoms.”
This is an apparent about-face after experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci said just the opposite.

Requiring masks and the effectiveness of wearing them is still being debated and creating conflicts as states begin to ease lockdowns. The liberal media has been doing their part to fuel the fears, while not always practicing what they preach.

Meanwhile, Gupta’s assessment and judgmental remarks were blasted by Twitter users.
Dr. Gupta has the freedom not to go out in public. He can choose to go to “mask only” establishments. The rest of us do not have to bend to his wishes.
