Comedian Daniel Lawrence Whitney, known by his stage name Larry the Cable Guy, weighed in on the government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis.

In a series of astute tweets on Wednesday, the 57-year-old actor and radio personality shared his view of the “draconian over reaching mandates” by state and local governments in the wake of the pandemic and gave Americans an important reminder along the way.

“People are now going to jail for trying to save their business while criminals are Being let out to keep them covid free,” Whitney tweeted.

“America 2020! The year the Bill of rights became selfish behavior,” he added. “Thanks to all the brave politicians with American flag lapel pins that are silent.”

When someone responded by saying “we wouldn’t be in this situation” if President Trump “had taken the coronavirus seriously back in January,” the comedian shot back with facts.

In another tweet, Whitney lamented the sweeping and stringent orders imposed by governments in their efforts to keep the virus from spreading, and noted how Americans should be angered by the loss of freedoms.

He followed with a quick response to someone who called out his take on the issue as “reckless.”

“The fact that people on social media get angry at other people that speak out and defend the bill of rights being trampled is beyond crazy,” he tweeted in a follow-up, noting it is “Orwellian” that Americans now have to wonder what they will be allowed to do by those they elected to office.

After more exchanges with other Twitter users as he defended his views – and the freedom to express them – Whitney declared he was done.

“That’s the end of my rants. I know I shouldn’t write this stuff but I can stand watching ordinary folks trying to save their businesses and way of life getting arrested by people with jobs that deem others trying to save theirs as non essential,” he wrote, adding that all Americans should be angry as well.

But he wasn’t actually done after all, and added another note saying he just wants the “best for everyone.”

When he did finally wrap it up, Whitney offered one small but important reminder.

“If you live in America and just surrender your rights no questions asked than (sic) you didn’t deserve them in the first place,” he wrote.

His “rant” apparently struck a chord.
