Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Monday that the country needs to reopen, and Americans have to accept the reality that there will be more COVID-19 deaths.
In an appearance on The Daily DC Podcast, the Republican politician told CNN host Dana Bash, balancing between the two factors will have to happen.
“Of course, everybody wants to save every life they can — but the question is, towards what end, ultimately?” Christie said. “Are there ways that we can… thread the middle here to allow that there are going to be deaths, and there are going to be deaths no matter what?”
Lost in the mix — perhaps intentionally — is that the shutdown of the U.S. economy was done to “flatten the curve,” or slow the spread of COVID-19, not to await a cure or vaccine.
“We’ve got to let some of these folks get back to work, because if we don’t, we’re going to destroy the American way of life in these families — and it will be years and years before we can recover,” he added.
There’s a strong belief on the right that Democrats and their media enablers want to prolong the shutdown. With a vested interest in destroying a booming economy, they are using the pandemic for political leverage in an election year.
Following the tried and true script of fear-mongering, Bash responded by pointing to projections that show a potential rise to nearly 3,000 U.S. deaths a day, asking if the American people will accept that.
“They’re gonna have to,” he said.
“We’re in the midst of a pandemic that we haven’t seen in over 100 years,” Christie added. “And we’re going to have to continue to do things.”
Asked what his message would be to the country if he was president, Christie noted that the country has seen trying times before, such as World War Two.
“The message is that the American people have gone through significant death before,” he said. “We’ve gone through it and we’ve survived it. We sacrificed those lives.”
CNN’s S.E. Cupp, a ranking Never Trump Republican, took to Twitter in response to Christie’s remarks to wish death on him and his family.
Cupp tweeted: “New rule: Anyone who’s not a doctor saying we have to just accept SOME deaths to reopen the country needs to take their family to a crowded place and serve food to anyone who needs it.”

The overriding factor here being that the Trump-hating CNN personality believes she gets to make the rules.
Here’s a quick response to Cupp’s tweet, to include this gem: “New rule: S. E. Cupp needs to stay locked in her basement forever.”

100% false. There is always risk in life. The notion that the goal was ever “no one dies” is also false. My wife and I would love to reopen our restaurant and serve food inside. Because the risk is not commensurate with this lock down.

This just in: Woman being paid millions of dollars a year for hosting a TV show says “I can keep doing this until the doctors say that people can get back to work, and anyone not getting paid right now that feels differently should purposely put their family at risk”.

Do we not accept the 40-60,000 deaths per year from seasonal flu? Do a lot of us not “accept” the 600,000 or so elective abortions in the U.S. every year? Why is this different?

Meanwhile you’re willing to accept the deaths of people who are unemployed and committing suicide, overdosing, are unable to get the medical help they need, and are losing their homes.
Not to mention the millions who will be unable to feed themselves once the shortages kick in.

You continue to be one of the worst examples of a state tool I have ever seen. Your grinding out of political nonsense to promote a socialist agenda is simply dangerous. You… are dangerous.
