Independent Rep. Justin Amash, a former Republican who abandoned the party last year because of his inexplicable hatred for the president, announced late Tuesday that he’s launched an exploratory committee to look into a possible presidential run.
But before critics ask “who’s he trying to fool,” given as he stands no objective chance of ever becoming president, they should read his entire announcement message.
Look:
Let’s do this. https://t.co/AhpQQhTauh

Today, I launched an exploratory committee to seek the @LPNational’s nomination for president of the United States. Americans are ready for practical approaches based in humility and trust of the people.

We’re ready for a presidency that will restore respect for our Constitution and bring people together. I’m excited and honored to be taking these first steps toward serving Americans of every background as president.

He announced that he’s specifically seeking a nomination with the Libertarian Party. And while it’s true the party has never even gotten close to winning the presidency, its mere presence in the upcoming 2020 race could be a major spoiler.
As of late April, there were only two major candidates in the race: President Donald Trump and presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden.
While there were plenty of Libertarian candidates, none of them possessed the clout to make even a slight dent in the general election. Up until Amash entered the race, that is. With his clout, his could wind up siphoning voters from either Biden or Trump. But what remains unclear is whom he’d damage more.
Because of his allegedly “conservative” leanings and his past as a Republican congressman, some suspect he might wind up siphoning off votes from the president. The votes would presumably come from “Never Trump” type Republicans who hate Trump but intend to vote for him anyway because he’s not a radical Democrat.
Look:
Last Year: GOP colleagues worry that @justinamash could siphon thousands of votes away from Trump in a general election, potentially moving Rust Belt states that Trump won in 2016 – such as MICHIGAN, WISCONSIN and PENNSYLVANIA – into the Democratic column https://t.co/rUB6JoNhbH

Just a hunch…@justinamash will get less than 1% of the vote and will siphon off more votes from Trump than Biden.

How do you know he won’t siphon enough Trump votes to ensure a Biden win? Cheri, you know many Rs, as do I. They would hold their noses & vote Trump because they can’t bring themselves to vote D. Amash gives them an alternative. Which Biden supporters would move to Amash?

Amash would help Bifen in Michigan.
He’s not much of a draw to Michigan Democrats, so he wouldn’t siphon many votes. He’d suck more independents away from Trump than Biden.— C. O’Pardy (@AuraLeeHarvey) April 29, 2020
However, the same logic holds true in reverse. Because of his past, Amash might wind up siphoning votes from “Never Trump” type Republicans who hate Trump so much that they’re currently planning to vote for the Democrat nominee instead.
And as it stands, the potential of this happening has many members of the Democrat Party freaking out over the possibility of Trump being re-elected to office.
Look (and laugh):
Please don’t run. Trump will win if you do. You’ll siphon off votes from Biden. Biden is our best chance for survival of the United States. Trump must be voted out.
— mimi (@mimi061062) April 29, 2020
DeVos’ doing, all the way.
Siphon votes from Biden in Amash’s district,
it goes for Trump,
Michigan goes for Trump,
and game over.Voila. Trump is President for Life.

As soon as Republicans became certain Trump is going down @justinamash declares he’s running third party.
Republicans know Trump and McConnell will keep funneling tax dollars to billionaires so are hoping Amash will siphon more votes from Democrats.#Resist #coronavirus— MikePence’sGayFriend (@KDavisGayFriend) April 29, 2020
Let’s not.
You’ll help elect Trump, Justin.
You know this: there is no run-off and no ranking of choices. The best you can do is siphon off votes because you have no chance of winning the Electoral College.
If Trump is re-elected because of you, you’ll be despised forever.
— Bruce Kanin (@bk9net) April 29, 2020
Just because you stood up to Trump doesn’t mean Democrat’s will vote for you. I certainly won’t do it. Why do you want to try and siphon off votes from Biden? If you truly cared to help the country you would endorse Biden and not run against him.
— KateATX (@minnnyme) April 29, 2020
And so you run for president? What would you say are the chances that your candidacy will just siphon votes from the Democratic candidate and help Trump stay in office? You *know* Trump’s supporters will never desert him; and your chances of winning are… basically nil.

That’s a lot of fear and paranoia …
Note how some left-wing conspiracy theorists are suggesting that Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is somehow behind Amash’s decision to consider running to obtain the Libertarian Party’s nomination.
DeVos’s wealthy, influential family already “dumped” Amash last May.
“The powerful DeVos family of West Michigan is ending its longtime support of U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, the libertarian Republican who has repeatedly clashed with President Donald Trump,” The Detroit News reported at the time.
“The family has not made any political contributions to Amash this cycle, and ‘they have no plans to do so,’ said family spokesman Nick Wasmiller.”
Regardless of who Amash’s run “helps,” one thing is clear, President Donald Trump doesn’t mind the challenge:
No, I think Amash would make a wonderful candidate, especially since he is way behind in his district and has no chance of maintaining his Congressional seat. He almost always votes for the Do Nothing Dems anyway. I like him even more than Jill Stein! https://t.co/V8kutnfvIj
