Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo teases big news on Gen. Flynn: He’ll be ‘completely exonerated’ this week

Fox News host Maria Bartiromo raised a few eyebrows on Sunday when she tweeted an intriguing tease saying retired Gen. Michael Flynn will be “completely exonerated this week.”

Bartiromo tweeted: “Breaking News: sources tell me @GenFlynn will be completely exonerated this week. It was a total fraud. A Set up. More tomorrow.”

The tease from the “Sunday Morning Futures” host comes after the release Friday of new information from the Justice Department, which prompted Flynn’s legal team to claim that the former Trump national security adviser was “set up” by the FBI.

Flynn’s lead attorney, Sidney Powell, said the information was damning, according to the Washington Examiner.

“This afternoon, the government produced to Mr. Flynn stunning Brady evidence that proves Mr. Flynn’s allegations of having been deliberately set up and framed by corrupt agents at the top of the FBI,” Powell said in a legal filing. “It also defeats any argument that the interview of Mr. Flynn on January 24, 2017 was material to any ‘investigation.’ The government has deliberately suppressed this evidence from the inception of this prosecution — knowing there was no crime by Mr. Flynn.”

Powell is pushing for a dismissal of the case against Flynn, arguing the FBI unfairly treated her client.

“Since August 2016 at the latest, partisan FBI and DOJ leaders conspired to destroy Mr. Flynn,” the attorney said in Friday’s court filing. “These documents show in their own handwriting and emails that they intended either to create an offense they could prosecute or at least get him fired.”

“The government’s misconduct in this case is beyond shocking and reprehensible. It mandates dismissal,” she added.

Flynn’s legal team said they had also “found further evidence of misconduct” by ex-Mueller prosecutor Brandon Van Grack, claiming that he made “baseless threats” to indict Flynn, the Examiner reported.

The threat of arresting Flynn’s son was also reportedly dangled in an attempt to get him to plead guilty to one count of lying to the FBI.

Here’s more from the Examiner on events that have led up to this point:

Flynn, 61, is fighting to dismiss the government’s case against him. He pleaded guilty in December 2017 for lying to investigators about his conversations with Russian diplomat Sergey Kislyak on sanctions on Russia and a United Nations resolution on Israel, but in January, he told the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., that he was “innocent of this crime.” He filed to withdraw his guilty plea after the Justice Department asked the judge to sentence Flynn up to six months in prison, though afterward, the department said probation would also be appropriate.

In February, Attorney General William Barr appointed an independent prosecutor, Jeff  Jensen, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, to conduct a review of the Flynn case.

On Friday, Flynn tweeted a declaration stating his innocence: “I am innocent of this crime and I request to withdraw my plea.”

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., appeared on “Sunday Morning Futures” to insist that the former Trump official had been framed by prosecutors.

“We don’t know what was submitted to the court on Friday evening but we believe that it’s possibly exculpatory evidence that the government had on General Flynn,” he said.

“We’re going to find out, he was framed,” he added. “Imagine that, being framed by our own government and by political operatives who don’t like you and I think that’s what we’re going to find out.”

And if the stench isn’t bad enough, the Washington Examiner also reported that U.S. Attorney John Durham, who is investigating the investigators, is looking into leaks of potentially classified information to the media in early 2017 about Flynn.

If there was a common theme to the reactions to Bartiromo’s tweet, it centered on accountability — a rare commodity in Washington, DC.
