Failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams thinks she would be “an excellent running mate” for former Vice President Joe Biden.
Though Biden has not reached out to ask the former Georgia state House Minority Leader, his mention of Abrams on the campaign trail and comments about picking a female running mate have apparently prompted her to blatantly pitch herself for the job.
Abrams, who infamously refused to concede to Republican Brian Kemp in her failed 2018 race, said she would be “honored” to be Biden’s vice-presidential pick in an interview with Elle magazine published Wednesday.
“I would be an excellent running mate,” the Democrat said.
“I have the capacity to attract voters by motivating typically ignored communities,” Abrams added. “I have a strong history of executive and management experience in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. I’ve spent 25 years in independent study of foreign policy. I am ready to help advance an agenda of restoring America’s place in the world. If I am selected, I am prepared and excited to serve.”
Abrams has often spouted her identity politics rhetoric, and even claimed that she lost the 2018 midterm race in Georgia due to voter suppression, declaring that “democracy had failed.”
“I am very self-aware, and I know that my resume…is usually reduced to ‘She didn’t become the governor of Georgia.’ But it is important to understand all the things I did to prepare for that contest,” Abrams told Elle.
Other possible vice-presidential picks have been floated to join Biden, who is the presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee. Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and California’s Kamala Harris have been mentioned as has Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. None of them have, however, been as forward as Abrams in touting themselves in the contest.
In an interview with FiveThirtyEight in January, Abrams predicted that she will be president by 2040.
“That’s my plan. And I’m very pragmatic,” she said at the time.
Earlier this month, she told MSNBC that she was “very honored to be considered” and would be “happy to serve” with Biden, though no formal advance had been made.
“I believe I bring the experience in the public sector, the private sector, the non-profit sector. I’ve also done international work and I’ve been an effective leader,” she told anchor Craig Melvin.
When asked if she would answer the phone if the former vice president were to call her, Abrams said she “absolutely” would.
“I would absolutely answer the phone, and I would be happy to serve as a running mate, not only for the election, but also serve as a partner in an administration,” she said.
The Elle interview created renewed hype for Abrams as Biden’s running mate, as liberals poured on the accolades, excited for what has not happened.
But many Twitter users weighed in on her audacity and the practical prospect of her even being selected.
