AOC slams Gov Cuomo for giving ‘preferential treatment’ to wealthy

When you traffic in divisive identity politics, as the progressive left does, using race and class to pit various demographics against each other in the quest to instill failed socialist policies, don’t expect anything different from them amid an unprecedented national emergency.

The U.S. continues to reel from the restrictions imposed to mitigate the spread of the Chinese virus COVID-19, as local and state authorities do what they can to soften the impact the disease may have in their communities.

In New York, Democratic Gov Andrew Cuomo announced that mortgage payments will be deferred based on financial hardship, and foreclosures will be suspended or postponed for 90 days.

But that didn’t go far enough for self-avowed socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the former bartender who now represents portions of New York City in Congress.

“If you called for a suspension or moratorium on mortgage payments, then we should also call for that same treatment on rent payments,” Ocasio-Cortez said Tuesday.

Appearing on WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show,” AOC perpetuated the myth that just because a person owns a home that they’re inherently wealthy, as she bemoaned the very behavior the radical left thrives on.

“We’re kind of creating a class and race issue,” the Democrat said. “We’re essentially rewarding and offering preferential treatment to landowners and folks who are more wealthy, and we’re not offering that same kind of relief to renters.”

Cuomo did not suspend rent payments, but the governor did suspend evictions for 90 days, Fox News reported — renters will still be responsible for missed payments.

As Cuomo explained, landowners have expenses too.

“I think our policy answers it,” he said this week, according to Fox News. “You cannot be evicted for non-payment of rent. It’s not that you won’t owe rent at one time, right, because you signed a contract. Even the people to whom you pay the rent have to pay the rent, right, and they have expenses. So, no evictions for nonpayment of rent and then we’ll see where we are and we’ll see how long this goes on.”

AOC also brought race into the equation, claiming that there are “racial and class inequities baked into the crisis.”

“If you are able to stay home, you are a privileged person in this moment,” the radical leftist told WNYC.

Pointing to working Americans like delivery drivers, grocery store workers, and food service employees, Ocasio-Cortez said that they “are overwhelmingly lower-income. They’re black. They’re brown… and they still have to pay rent tomorrow.”

The lawmaker took to Twitter to claim that “Latinas” are not paid equally, linking to dubious “facts” from the National Partnership for Women & Families, saying that this plays a role in the ability to pay rent.

“Rent is due tomorrow for millions, but nearly 1 in 5 households have already experienced a coronavirus layoff or reduction in work hours,” she tweeted. “If we had #equalpay, Latinas would have an “extra” $28,000 from last year to each fall back on right now.”

One social media user said “nothing is ever good enough” for AOC, as even some on the left grow tired of her antics.

Here’s a small sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:
