Congratulations, Bernie, you’re the new Hitler!
In early 2016, as then-GOP non-establishment presidential candidate Donald Trump began to piledrive through the primaries, the media’s “journalists” and pundits began comparing him to deceased Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.
Four years later, they’ve begun to do the same thing again — except this time their target is Democrat non-establishment presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, and the first pundit to posit the comparison was MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.
During the network’s coverage Saturday of the Nevada caucus, he complained about Sanders’ blowout victory and warned that, despite concerns about the senator easily losing to Trump in November, it’s far too late now “to stop him.”
That’s when he dropped the Nazi reference.
Listen (disable your adblocker if the video doesn’t appear):
“I’m reading last night about the fall of France in the summer of 1940,” he said, referencing France’s surrender on June 22, 1940, to … wait for it … Nazi Germany.
“And the general calls up Churchill and says, ‘It’s over,’ and Churchill says, ‘How can it be? You got the greatest army in Europe. How can it be over?’ He said, ‘It’s over.'”
The remarks prompted immediate backlash from left-wingers outraged over Matthews comparing America’s first-ever ethnically Jewish front-runner candidate to the Nazis.
Look:
It is absolutely unacceptable that Matthews is making comparisons between Bernie Sanders, whose family was murdered by Nazis, to Nazis.@HardballChris needs to retire. Immediately.

Chris Matthews needs to step down or be fired!
These comments are completely out of line. We need journalism not hyperbolic hysteria. #FireChrisMatthewshttps://t.co/uRH7pbIdvk— James Thompson (@JamesThompsonKS) February 23, 2020
Chris Matthews on MSNBC comparing the Sanders Nevada victory to the Nazis circa 1940. Is it too much to ask to stop making Nazi comparisons for a Jewish candidate who lost family in the holocaust? My god this is WAY beyond the pale.
— Ed Oswald (@edoswald) February 22, 2020
Chris Mathews has been generous to me on a number of occasions, even blurbing my book. However, his constant references to political violence and today Nazism to describe Bernie Sanders campaign is beyond the pale. @HardballChris must resign or be fired from @MSNBC.
— Arun Chaudhary (@ArunChaud) February 22, 2020
1) Bernie absolutely *slayed* in Nevada
2) Chris Matthews and James Carville had complete meltdowns on live TV, complete with Matthews switching from communist slurs to Nazi 3rd Reich slurs against Bernie and his supporters
3) #firechrismatthews now trending!

Sickening Trump-level anti-Semitism from @MSNBC’s @HardballChris. #FireChrisMatthews pic.twitter.com/WiOpr53RAa

MSNBC needs to #FireChrisMatthews. If they don’t then they’re okay with him comparing supporters of the only Jewish candidate to the fucking NAZIS who killed much of that candidate’s family. #NevadaCaucus #NVCaucus

Americans have no tolerance for this kind of hatred.#firechrismatthews

Today was not the first instance of blatant anti-Semitism from Chris Matthews on-air. Enough is enough. The blatant bigotry and bias has been given a pass for long enough. #FireChrisMatthews.

They were right and wrong at the same time.
On one hand, the “hyperbolic hysteria” was indeed disturbing, though to be clear, it was only being pushed by Matthews and other left-wing media personalities.
Over at Fox News, meanwhile, the commentary was reportedly far more “sensible” and “rational.”
Just watched FOX coverage of the Nevada results and it’s far more sensible, rational, and fair to Bernie than any of the hysterical garbage you’re seeing on MSNBC
— Michael Tracey (@mtracey) February 22, 2020
But they were also wrong in the sense that these are the exact same sorts of far-left zealots who’ve spent the last four years smearing Trump as a Nazi and his kind supporters as veritable Storm Troopers.
For them to now complain about such comparisons being lobbed at Sanders seems rather hypocritical, especially when you factor in all the counter-evidence.
Trump has been the most pro-Jewish president in American history. How so? Because for one, he had the guts to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and then relocate the U.S. Embassy to the ancient city. He’s likewise been unequivocal in his support of the Israelis over the terror-affiliated Palestinians.
For the past four years Donald Trump has been incessantly likened to Hitler and his supporters to Nazis, so to all the outraged Dems screaming about Chris Matthews making a clumsy, innocuous comparison between Bernie’s win and 1940 France, may I just say… pic.twitter.com/Np8TMUo4pu

Yet when confronted with these facts, Matthews’ hypocritical critics doubled down on their criticisms of Trump, thus demonstrating they’re just as detached from reality as the MSNBC host whom they now hate.
Look:
OK, media types, here’s a little primer:
• It IS okay to compare Sanders to Trump.
• It IS okay to compare Trump to Hitler.
• It IS NOT okay to compare Sanders to Hitler.#NevadaCaucus #firechrismatthews #FireChuckTodd— Mike Selinker (@mikeselinker) February 23, 2020
One difference between Trump and Sanders is that Trump IS like Hitler and his followers ARE Nazis.
— Pixel_Harmonies (@RandeeSchmidt3) February 23, 2020
Well, Trump IS a nazi, White power fascist so therefore it is a true statement compared to asshat Matthews claiming a jewish man to be a nazi.
— ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ D.O.B ? (@Divine_baal) February 23, 2020
Are you dense? Probably. Here: @SenSanders is only alive because his family literally had to endure real Nazis. 42 was elected because literal neo-nazis and other, nearly identical groups support him. At best he won’t reject them because they can vote + so many lies. AT BEST
— Ghost with the Most (@_shadethrown) February 23, 2020
*facepalm*
Matthews’ critics were also wrong because, while Sanders is an ethnic Jew, he’s never actually stood up for the Jewish people, ergo why he hobnobs with virulent anti-Semites.
No, It Doesn’t Matter That Bernie Sanders Is Ethnically Jewish. He’s a Jew In Name Only. https://t.co/anYukpehLy pic.twitter.com/t7rhOcveBf
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) February 12, 2016
But don’t worry, Bernie is proud to be a Jew. Super proud. Sure, he stands against religious Judaism in virtually every iteration; sure, he stands with people who wish for Israel’s destruction.
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) February 19, 2020
She’s a campaign surrogate for Bernie Sanders, but don’t worry, Bernie is “rediscovering” his Jewish identity guys https://t.co/j0hPnvHckF
