Melania Trump honored with Palm Beach Atlantic University’s 2020 Woman of Distinction award

There has been a noticeable drop in the amount of positive attention given to First Lady Melania Trump as opposed to, say, Michelle Obama. Despite being a former model, she’s not gracing the front page of different magazines every week or giving her favorite work out tips and recipes to breathless reporters waiting to write a glowing review of her. But perhaps that is a good thing because it gives her more time to focus on the accolades that matter.

For instance, on Wednesday Melania traveled to Palm Beach, Florida to receive Palm Beach Atlantic University’s 2020 Woman of Distinction award. The honor was given as a result of her hard work on issues affecting children, as well as for “contributions to the community.

During her speech, which lasted about 8 minutes, the first lady discussed the impact of opioid addiction on children, the success of her anti-cyberbullying and anti-drug abuse programs, and revealed that drug overdose deaths have dropped by 4 percent for the first time in 29 years.

“Opioids have affected the lives of more than 2 million children in the United States,” the first lady noted. “I’ve seen firsthand how opioid abuse affects families who are struggling with addiction. I have traveled to children’s hospitals and treatment facilities who support those affected by opioids.”

She also discussed the dangers of social media use, especially among children.

“Technology has become a daily part of our children’s lives in both positive and negative ways,” she explained. “We live in an age where too many people allowed the number of retweets or likes to define their self-worth.”

“I’m convinced now more than ever that teaching healthy online behavior is crucial to securing a safer future for our children,” she added.

In addition to warning about the dangers of online harassment, Melania also touted her “Be Best” campaign which encourages thoughtful interactions both online and on the street.

“Two years ago I launched Be Best, an initiative dedicated to ensuring that we as Americans are doing everything we can to take care of the next generation,” she said. “When we teach our children to cherish our values and care for each other; they are better prepared to carry on America’s legacy of compassion service and patriotism. It is our duty as adults and parents to ensure they had the best opportunities to lead fulfilling, healthy, and successful lives.”

The university, which serves approximately 2,500 students, 550 of whom were reportedly in attendance at the luncheon where Melania Trump was honored, called her a “worldwide role model” and says it honored her for her “compassion and kindness.

Twitter was alight with people eager to congratulate the first lady on the award:
