‘It vindicates Trump’: Greg Gutfeld baffled by freak-out over Bolton book quote

Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld was confused by President Trump’s defenders “freaking out” over John Bolton’s upcoming book.

The co-host of Fox News Channel’s “The Five” discussed reporting on the forthcoming book by the former national security adviser which revealed his claims about Trump and Ukraine aid.

“We don’t know who leaks it. But we know why – the timing tells you why,” Gutfeld said Monday. “This is in order to nail the president.”

A report by The New York Times on the manuscript of Bolton’s book cited a claim that the president told Bolton in August 2019 that he would withhold millions in security assistance to Ukraine until its government agreed to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, his son Hunter Biden and others.

The New York Times cited “multiple people” who “described Mr. Bolton’s account of the Ukraine affair,” though it was unclear if the publication had actually seen the manuscript. And while the reports ignited demands by Democrats to call Bolton as a witness in Trump’s impeachment trial, many questioned the anonymous sources and the unseen manuscript that were reported.

Gutfeld noted that the overreactions by supporters of the president are unnecessary as Bolton’s claims could actually vindicate Trump as someone who cared about the corruption in Ukraine and was trying to weed it out.

“But the thing I don’t understand is, nobody’s actually seen the actual quote,” he said of the reporting on Bolton’s manuscript.

“Because I think it could actually defend the president,” his co-host and Fox News anchor Dana Perino interjected.

“People are freaking out on the right about this, and I’m going, like, it vindicates Trump, because he’s telling everybody what Trump really thought, which was that Ukraine was corrupt,” Gutfeld said.

He added that this was “just another bombshell” by the media which amounts to nothing in the end.

“The media has TBD – Terminal Bombshell Disease,” he said. “But it’s nothing. But the bottom line is, nobody knows what it is.”

The president shot back at the allegations on Monday, saying he “NEVER told John Bolton that the aid to Ukraine was tied to investigations into Democrats, including the Bidens” and accused Bolton of simply trying “to sell a book.”

Rep. Mark Meadows slammed Democrats for clinging to “anonymous sources” leaking information “at the 11th hour.”

“We’re talking about an unpublished manuscript that only ‘anonymous sources’ have seen, leaked by someone at the 11th hour, just as Democrats are losing what little impeachment momentum they had left. We’ve seen this playbook used before. Americans won’t buy it,” the North Carolina Republican said in a statement.

“The latest New York Times report may provide fodder for a political narrative, but it doesn’t change the facts. And in reality, the facts haven’t changed since day one of this circus,” he added.
