Fox News host Tucker Carlson turned a spotlight on San Francisco as a city that is in decline.

Carlson highlighted the California city in a segment on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” as part of his series on San Francisco, called “American Dystopia,” which shines a light on how government has led to the city’s demise.

“It’s hard to wreck a city as beautiful as San Francisco but they have effectively done it,” he said.

“Civilization itself is coming apart in San Francisco. Right there in broad daylight on the city’s sidewalks that are littered with junkies and feces and dirty needles,” Carlson added. “The jewel of our Pacific coast is now filthier and more chaotic than downtown Mumbai, India. Literally. How did that happen? We need to know.”

The Fox News host warned viewers that some of the footage shot by his team is “graphic and disturbing,” but added a reminder that “this is what they’d like to do to your neighborhood.”

Scenes of drug addicts “looking for a drug to reverse an opioid overdose” and paramedics rushing to help another person who overdosed on a city sidewalk are common, Carlson said, as the “city’s left-wing officials no longer enforce so-called quality-of-life crimes life crimes like public urination, or defecation or even open-air drug use.”

San Francisco police Lt. Tracy McCray noted how many crimes see few, if any, consequences. Asked about the punishments for various potential acts such as stealing a video game, smoking crack on a public street, breaking a car window or camping out on the sidewalk, McCray responded that charges would usually end in just a citation being issued.

“If I stole a wallet or purse?” the Fox News team asked.

“No use of force? Citation,” she replied.

“If I was carrying an illegal firearm, what happens?” McCray was asked.

“Discharge? Further review, back out on the street,” she responded.

“They make the decision whether [criminal cases] will get charged or not and most of the time, it’s like ‘Nope, not charged. Nope, not charged,'” McCray said, blaming the city’s left-wing prosecutors for the rise in crime.

According to Fox News:

According to the FBI, San Francisco has the highest per-capita rate of property crimes among America’s 20 most populous cities. Violent crime on the city’s mass transit system has more than doubled between 2014 and 2018. According to a tracker published by the San Francisco Chronicle, an average of 66 “smash-and-grab” car thefts were reported each day in December. Many more go unreported.

“Our car windows got busted. I didn’t bother making a report,” McCray said.

“Just ask anybody. You know it. We feel it. Crime is really out of control,” City Journal contributor Erica Sandberg, who lives in San Francisco, told Fox News. “Whether it’s property crime or even violent crime, it’s scary.”

Carlson noted that his crew “filmed drug dealers selling drugs in broad daylight” and that sidewalks are littered with used syringes, even in upscale neighborhoods where some apartments rent for nearly $4,000 a month. The needles are, in many cases, provided free by the city.

“Rather than confront the drug use like a normal city, San Francisco enables the drug use by distributing roughly 400,000 free syringes every month,” Carlson said. “City leaders say that giving out syringes reduces the risk of disease.”

“Of course, no one wants somebody to have to get HIV or Hep [Hepatitis] C,” Sandberg said. “But the unintended consequence is insanity.”

“Even in what we would consider our nicer areas,” McCray said, “going down to the marina, the North Beach area, just walking through is like a minefield because you never know what’s coming around the corner.”
