Teacher ‘in tears’ after principal confiscates pizzas she’d rewarded her hard-working students with … unfair to other classes

Thanks to the Social Justice Grinch, a class of middle school students from Iowa almost missed out on a pizza party they’d worked hard to earn.

The story begins at Brody Middle School in Des Moines, where teacher Amy Benjamin recently pledged to reward her students for their good behavior by hosting an in-class pizza party for them.

There’s nothing unusual about that, right? It’s long been a tradition to reward students with pizza parties.

Come the day of the pizza party, Benjamin ordered the pizza, paid for it and signed the receipt. But before she could share the pizza with her students, something foul happened.

In a Facebook post published Thursday afternoon, not too long after this happened, one of the students’ parents, Neil Erickson, explained everything:

My son attends Brody Middle School here in Des Moines. His class earned a pizza party that I believe the teacher paid…

He wrote that before the pizza party could even begin, Brody Middle School principal Thomas Hoffman stormed into the classroom and seized the pizzas like a grinch. Like the Social Justice Grinch, to be more exact.

“Now my son and his classmates lost the party they worked hard to earn and the pizza I’m sure is wasted now…and the teacher was left in tears. I just can’t believe it!” Erickson added.

Why though, why on Earth would the Social Justice Grinch rob the students of their earned treat? Because of social justice, of course!

In multiple statements to local station KCCI, Hoffman harped endlessly about “fairness,” “equality” and “inclusion.”

“As principal, one of my top priorities is fairness and equal opportunity for our students at Brody Middle School,” he said in an initial statement. “That applies to everything from the chances they have to learn in the classroom to rewards and recognitions by our teachers and staff. We have discussed this from time to time as a school, and have agreed that fairness is a criteria we want to follow in how we treat all Brody students.”

Sound familiar?

“However, I do want to apologize for being overly strict in applying that standard today when it came to one of our classrooms. Most of all, I want to apologize for disappointing any of our students, and punishing them,” he continued.

PUNISHING THEM?

The statement concluded with him offering to feed the school’s 700+ students pizza if enough people donate their hard-earned money to fund his utopian pizza party.

“I understand that many people have been talking about having pizzas delivered to Brody tomorrow,” he wrote. “If that’s the case, we’ll gladly welcome any donations, and arrange for a nice sendoff for our 700 students on the last day before Winter break.”

How sweet of the comrade …

But the statement apparently didn’t sit well with locals, because the following day, after the story had gone viral and the public had gotten a chance to read all about the Social Justice Grinch, he caved and bent the knee quicker than Chick-fil-A.

While he didn’t pay for the pizzas himself, which would have been the proper thing to do given that he’d ruined the original pizzas, he did allow local donors to provide enough pizza for two of the school’s classes to enjoy a pizza party.

The fact that Hoffman was willing to put aside his vision of a pizza party utopia featuring every student at the school was kind of nice.

However, the Social Justice Grinch didn’t seem to actually learn too much from this.

“Every kid earned it. Every kid deserved it, but it was a timing issue because our building was full with use,” he said in an additional statement.

“There are some kids who don’t eat pizza, and we don’t want a situation where kids are in a classroom where everyone is eating except for them, because of gluten or lactose intolerance they can’t eat it. So it’s inclusion, instead of excluding kids that can’t or choose not to eat pizza.

And there was that social justice again …

As is always the case, it was based on a ridiculous assumption — namely that his teacher, Miss Benjamin, was apparently too stupid to check whether her students had any issues with the planned pizza party.

But judging by the video below, there were no issues. And assuming there would have even been issues, for some reason Hoffman thinks Benjamin wouldn’t have been able to handle them herself by making accommodations for the lactose intolerant students or whatnot.

Erickson has for his part said he hopes everybody learned a lesson from what happened. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear the Social Justice Grinch has …
