White House responds to Schumer’s ‘laughable’ request after Dems’ ‘midnight’ impeachment move

With the Democrat-led House all but certain to vote along party lines to impeach President Donald Trump, the focus shifts to the U.S. Senate, where a trial will be held and, continuing in the Democratic Party’s rich tradition of double standards, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is already questioning the fairness of such a trial.

In what Schumer equates to fairness, he wants to call his choice of witnesses, even as he denies the opposition the same right, dismissing their choices as “extraneous” witnesses.

It’s all enough to make the White House laugh, as seen in a tweet from press secretary Stephanie Grisham

“Let us hope that fairness will prevail” a laughable quote from [Schumer] this AM…. after the dems release an “impeachment report” in the middle of the night. Thankfully the people of this country continue to see the partisan sham that this is,” Grisham tweeted.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Schumer proposed to call former national security adviser John Bolton, acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, senior Mulvaney adviser Robert Blair as witnesses, along with Michael Duffey of the Office of Management and Budget, the New York Post reported.

“Trials have witnesses. That’s what trials are all about. And documents,” Schumer said in an appearance Monday on MSNBC.

For the record, Schumer adamantly opposed calling witnesses during the 1999 Senate impeachment trial of then-President Bill Clinton.

Bolton, who has since had a falling out with the president, listened in on the call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with Democrats alleging Trump leveraged aid to get Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden.

At the same time he opposes the GOP calling witnesses like Hunter Biden and former Democratic National Committee consultant Alexandra Chalupa, both of whom where blocked from testifying before the House Intelligence Committee by chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

“I don’t know a single person who said, ‘Does Hunter Biden know anything about the specific facts that were presented here?'” Schumer said.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, responded to a tweet from the Washington Examiner’s Byron York to say Democrats had their chance to call Bolton and Mulvaney during the House investigation.

“He should have talked to Schiff, Nadler, and Pelosi,” Cornyn tweeted. “They dropped their demands for this testimony when it became apparent that witnesses were going to seek court guidance on competing demands. Schiff dropped the ball.”

In an effort to get a jump on the media narrative. Schumer sent McConnell a letter late Sunday, urging him to conduct a “fair and honest” trial beginning on Jan. 6 with Chief Justice John Roberts being sworn in to preside over the proceedings, according to the Post.

President Trump is expected to face two articles of impeachment, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

McConnell spokesman Doug Andres said the majority leader is planning on meeting with Schumer, the Post reported.

“Leader McConnell has made it clear he plans to meet with Leader Schumer to discuss the contours of a trial soon,” Andres said. “That timeline has not changed.”

In an appearance Monday on “Outnumbered Overtime,” former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said he was “embarrassed” for Schumer.

“To quote Greta Thunberg, I would say to Chuck Schumer, ‘How dare you?'” he said. “And here is why: He said nothing during the entire time that the House was rejecting any idea that Republicans would get a chance to hear from key witnesses, whether it was the whistleblower, [fired FBI investigator] Peter Strzok, [former FBI lawyer] Lisa Page, [former FBI director] James Comey, [former CIA Director] John Brennan, go through the whole list, they wouldn’t hear from any of them.”

“And now Chuck Schumer, seriously, is demanding that he gets to call witnesses for this sham? I am embarrassed for him.”
